Should Military Mothers Be Deployed Overseas?

military family 300x212 Should Military Mothers Be Deployed Overseas?A recent post about a single mother soldier who refused deployment to care for her son has spurred a lively debate about what limits and protections, if any, should be afforded to mothers in the military.

While some commentators are arguing that women have no place in the army whatsoever, others are arguing that no soldier deserves special treatment and that women who “shirk their responsibilities make things harder for those who are trying to receive equal treatment.” Continue reading »

Burglars Pause to Heat Bottle for Crying Baby

baby bottle 300x199 Burglars Pause to Heat Bottle for Crying BabyIt was either the holiday spirit or two robbers really wanted a crying baby to shut up. They stopped midway through an armed robbery to heat up the baby’s bottle.

Then they untied the family’s teenage son so he could feed the baby. Continue reading »

Michael Jackson Appears in Baby’s Ultrasound

mj thriller25 press shot 2 1 Michael Jackson Appears in Babys UltrasoundYesterday we learned that it’s normal for an ultrasound to look, well, a little weird.  The baby’s still cooking, after all, and as one tech once told me:  “Ultrasound is kind of like trying to tell what an elephant looks like by feeling it’s tail.”

What’s not normal, though, is looking at your baby’s ultrasound picture and seeing the King of Pop growing in your uterus.

British couple Dawn Kelley and William Hickman were looking at a 20 week scan of their seventh child when they saw something familiar.  It wasn’t Grandpa’s nose or Mom’s chin — it was Michael Jackson’s face. Take a look:

Day Care Sells Cocaine

image of cocaine Day Care Sells CocaineFinding a good day care is so hard these days, you have to accept compromises. Maybe your kid’s day care is a little pricey, doesn’t stay open as late as you’d like, or maybe the day care sells cocaine.

An Arkansas couple was arrested for selling cocaine out of the same house where they operate a day care. Husband Timothy Boston got caught in a sting operation by police. Catching a whiff of the jig being up, Boston fled to Texas where he was arrested. His wife, Denise, was arrested at the couple’s home/child care center the same day.

Baby Safe After Being Trapped in Washing Machine

177675 6012 Baby Safe After Being Trapped in Washing MachineTwo Mississippi tots found a fun way to entertain themselves while their mother did laundry at a local laundromat: The four-year-0ld pushed his seven-month-old baby brother around in a rolling basket.

The game turned (more) dangerous, though, when the older boy pushed the basket up against his mother’s washing machine.  The baby leaned over to get a closer look, and the boy pushed the baby in.

Babies Behind Bars: Ohio Prison Program for Mothers

baby prison sm250 Babies Behind Bars: Ohio Prison Program for MothersAccording to the U.S. Department of Justice, there were 115,779 women in prison as of 2008.  Of those women, most are single mothers.  So what becomes of a child whose only parent is serving time?  At the Ohio Reformatory for Women in Marysville, OH, babies are serving time with their mothers.

The idea for the program came from former Ohio state Rep. Cheryl Winkler and Barbara Turner, a former nurse convicted of prescription drug offenses. Pregnant at the time she was sentenced to prison in Marysville, Turner fought to have her baby’s father present at the birth.  She won that battle, but her baby was not allowed to live with her in prison.  But by 2001, the nursery program was established and there are currently 11 women living with their children at Marysville. 2-Year-Old Can’t Cry, It Would Kill Her

t 2 Year Old Can’t Cry, It Would Kill HerKids cry all the time. I think my son cried this weekend when I screwed up and didn’t call him by his recently chosen name “Grand Master Batman Flash” (I think I called him “Grand Master Batman Fletch“). There might be no mode that comes more naturally to children than crying.

But for Two-year-old Tianna McHugh crying is not an option. When Tianna cries her body seizes and stiffens, her skin turns white, her heart stops beating and she stops breathing.
