Did you know today was Johnny Appleseed Day?
My son has to bring in an apple treat today to celebrate Johnny Appleseed Day. At his school, this is done each year and if it weren’t, I probably wouldn’t even know that there is a day devoted to celebrate him.
Johnny Appleseed was born John Chapman on September 26, 1774 in Massachusetts. He created apple orchards in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Ohio, and after 200 years, some of those trees still bear apples, believe it or not.
Apples are such an all around healthy food and even most picky eaters still enjoy an apple. Today is a great day to make an apple dessert or snack.
Nothing’s more wholesome than a shiny ripe apple in your child’s lunch, right? Apples are the epitome of healthy snacks.
But with modern farming practices, you’re getting more than you bargain for when you bite into one.
The Environmental Working Group’s 2011 “Dirty Dozen” list is out, and apples top the list for most pesticides remaining in the fruit. They’re the dirtiest produce available, even after they’ve been washed and peeled. Ew. That’s a lot of chemicals in a food we think of as safe to feed our kids.
For picky eaters, apples are often one of the few things they will eat. If your kids live on apples, like mine do, you may want to make shelling out for organics a priority.

I’m a sucker for tradition. So I was excited last week to head out for our third annual Halloween Hayride to the Witches House at our local pick-your-own spot. After less than two hours, we left $100 lighter and a whole lot of pumpkins and apples heavier. When did wholesomeness get so expensive?
