The ER is no fun!
Hospitals and children do not mix, at least according to children. Even as adults most of us don’t care for being in the hospital. Now almost three years after over the counter cold medicine for infants was removed from the market a new government study shows ER visits in these same infants have been cut in half.
In October of 2007 a voluntary recall swept the market pulling all cold and cough medicine intended for children two years and younger, one year later that was extended to children ages four and under. Continue reading »
Having lost my “ER viriginity” this year, once for each child, I know how stressful a visit to the ER can be. Given that neither of my kids had major, life-threatening conditions and were not admitted, though, for me it was more annoying and day-wrecking than lastingly traumatic, and the same is true of my kids.

Dear children: There is a reason why I annoy you with all those warnings not to run with scissors/pencils/sharp sticks. And this is it.
A 14-month-old Chinese boy is being described as “lucky” after a chopstick was removed from his skull. The toddler was playing with the chopsticks when he fell, and the stick went up his nose and actually made its way 4 cm into his brain.
It had to be a horrific site, one of those moments that seems to happen in slow-motion:
Nick Harris, 32, was driving his daughter to school when he saw a Mercury sedan back up out of a driveway and run over a six-year-old girl.
Two Mississippi tots found a fun way to entertain themselves while their mother did laundry at a local laundromat: The four-year-0ld pushed his seven-month-old baby brother around in a rolling basket.
The game turned (more) dangerous, though, when the older boy pushed the basket up against his mother’s washing machine. The baby leaned over to get a closer look, and the boy pushed the baby in.
Even at a distance and as blurry as it was, the video was horrifying enough to make any parent’s — heck, any person’s — blood run cold: A mom and baby are waiting for an oncoming train when the stroller starts to roll. The mother stumbles, and the stroller falls onto the tracks and gets run over by the train.
Earlier this week that mother, Shweta Verma, a dentist and mom to 6-month-old Saurish, talked with Today’s Matt Lauer about the incident.
An intoxicated 12-year-old strolled up to a convenience store parking lot in Lincoln Nebraska, stole an ’88 Honda Accord, then went on a driving rampage, crashing into three cars before a citizen stopped the boy and tackled him to the ground.
