25 Ways to Keep Kids Safe on National Missing Childrens Day
May 25th is National Missing Childrens Day. This is a week where the folks at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) are joined by others who work in the area of child protection to educate families, teachers and policy makers on how to keep kids safe.
Lately, in the mom-blog world there’s been a lot of crime statistics being quoted that imply that these people really don’t have any work left to do. Lenore Skenazy decries that crime is at a 40 year low and that we’re all succumbing to “Predator Paranoia”. That this is due to the media and not to any actual danger or risk. This message has been all over the internet, on TV, and even in Time Magazine in the past week. The week leading up to National Missing Children’s Day. Continue reading »
“I Love Charts” is Awesome. If You Love Charts. AND I DO.
I adore charts of all kinds. Because I am what is referred to as a “big dork”. So I was very happy when the extremely cool and non-dorky Jason Oberholtzer agreed to talk to me his successful Tumblr and new book, “I Love Charts“.
Julie: Hi Jason. I found your Tumblr “I Love Charts” because I also love charts very, very much. Thanks for agreeing to answer some questions for me. I’m a little worried you’re going to think these questions are really stupid, mostly because they are. Here goes. Why do you love charts?
Jason: I love that they can tell a concise story, whether that story is about data or about somebody’s experience.
Julie: What is your favorite kind of chart?
Jason: The kind that gets sent to us at 3am, scrawled on a bar napkin. Continue reading »
Awesome Teachers Dance Bomb Their Students
Just in case you were wondering if only students got Spring Fever, the answer is no. At Abby Kelly Foster High School (a charter school in Worcester, Massachusetts) the teachers decided to have a little fun. The ring leader was a history teacher named Mike Penney, who came up with this great idea:
Let’s dance bomb the students.
So someone went around and interviewed students, who are seen answering questions for the camera very earnestly. And in the background their teachers rocking their brains out. And the students are totally oblivious. It. Is. So. Awesome.
You know why I love this so much? Because the teachers get to have a giggle at the students’ expense, but it’s in no way degrading or mean. It’s all silly and fun and light-hearted. YOU GO, TEACHERS. Far away high five from me. Continue reading »
Today is Melanoma Monday
The first Monday in May has been deemed Melanoma Monday by the American Academy of Dermatology in an effort to prevent this disease and save lives. Melanoma is also known as skin cancer. The perception of skin cancer is often that it’s one of the “good” cancers, easily identified and easily treated. Given the amount of time we’ve all recently spent shaking out heads over the charming lady from New Jersey known as “The Tanning Mom“, it may actually be a good time to give a serious thought to effects too much sun. Rollerskating is Better than Crack
The internet based comedy duo Rhett and Link have created a YouTube commercial for a rollerskating rink in Reno, Nevada that is attracting a lot of attention.
The first question is usually – is this for real? YES. The answer is yes. The guys who made the commercial are comedians and self-described “internetainers”. They have a tons of really funny videos on their YouTube channel.
But Roller Kingdom? Is real. In fact, the grown-ups in the commercial are all employees at the Roller Rink. Except for the two gang member in blue hoodies – those dudes are Rhett and Link (the comedians). The owner of Roller Kingdom, Brad Armstrong, appears in the video as a kidnapper in a dirty wife-beater and knit cap. His employees George and Julio also make appearances. Continue reading »
15 Awesomely Awkward Birthday Photos
Some of us want our kids to have The Perfect Birthday. Some of us gave up on that a long time ago. The only thing perfect about birthdays in my family is my confidence that someone will have a meltdown, someone else will get jealous and/or crabby and that I will need a refreshing adult beverage by mid-afternoon.
I have reason to think a lot about birthdays right now, as 2 of my kids are celebrating on this month. So at least in my house, late Spring seems to be birthday central.
I was therefore delighted to see a whole section about this on the hilarious website Awkward Family Photos. They did not disappoint. They range from cute to embarrassing to downright terrifying. They are awesome. Continue reading »
Sophia Grace and Rosie Have Tea with Hugh Grant
Are you ready for some adorableness? With a soupcon of naughty behavior from a handsome British actor? Then look no further. Sophia Grace and Rosie, pint-sized regulars on The Ellen Show, had tea with fellow British sensation Hugh Grant and asked him about his new movie Pirates! Band of Misfits, which opened this week.
Cousins Sophia Grace (age 8) and Rosie (age 5) were plucked from YouTube obscurity by Ellen last year and have become regular contributors on her show. The very sweet and charming little girls seem to enthusiastically love their new found fame.
Hugh Grant, despite recently becoming a new father, seems as delightfully Daniel Cleaver-esque as ever. He toned it down a little for the girls, but a bit of rakishness was still apparent. Which makes me sort of love him. Continue reading »
