About two-thirds of the country’s juvenile inmates suffer from at least one mental illness. And yet the State of New York, which incarcerates around 800 youths at any given time, does not have even one full-time psychiatrist working in juvenile prisons.

Police in Waltham, Massachusetts have deemed one child’s bullying serious enough to warrant criminal charges. An 11-year-old girl from Fitzergerald Elementary School was charged with two charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (a foot and a locker door) and another charge of assault with a dangerous weapon (scissors). I have a really hard time with zoos–specifically, with the fact that they exist.
I realize logically that many zoos treat animals like royalty; that many also help protect endangered species; and that we simply no longer inhabit an ecology system in which all animals can roam free, unfettered by human activities. Girl Scout cookies sales dipped about 1 percent last year. (I don’t know who these people with financial and dietary willpower are, but they’re certainly not me.)
