Why Were Uggs Banned in a PA Middle School? And No, It Was Not Brought on by the Fashion Police
The students at Pottstown Middle School located somewhere in chilly Pennsylvania can no longer wear their cozy Ugg boots to class. And apparently, they only have themselves to blame for this ban.
No, it’s not because the principal thinks Uggs are totally, like, 2010, it’s that the kids are using their roomy footwear to hide items that aren’t allowed in class …
The school has a strict rule that no cellphones, iPods or other electronic gear can be brought into the classroom, but communication-addicted kids were smuggling their phones in by hiding them in their boots.
“Students may continue to wear outdoor boots to and from school to protect them from cold, snow and ice but need to change into a pair of sneakers or shoes before entering homeroom. Students may also continue to wear lace-up, tight at the ankle, boots, shoes and high-top sneakers,” said a letter sent home with students.
And the community? They apparently think it’s a ridiculous new rule and said just that on Facebook. “Quite absurd,” a poster said. “How about a cell phone ban in school, as reasonable footwear is more necessary than a cell phone? UGG…Sounds like fashion profiling…lol!” And a student wrote, “Hmmm. I know most girls hide them in their bra, or their waist band. It’s ineffective. They will just keep finding other places. Plus my phone fits in my sneaker.”
Do you think that’s a silly rule or practical?

Brandi commented on Jan 29 12 at 4:20 pmKids are going to find ways to sneak cell phones & ipods into school, but that doesn’t mean a school should make it easy for them. As a parent, I would be annoyed, however a middle schooler needs to learn about the consequences of breaking the rules.
cat commented on Jan 29 12 at 5:40 pmstupid rule, ban the cell phones and ipods.
Amanda commented on Jan 29 12 at 5:41 pmI think that if schools incorporated more technology into their classrooms, then this generation of children would pay more attention. Education needs to catch up with the modern era. The education system in this country is completely obsolete, a la Waiting for Superman. Teachers need to get technology into the classroom, and they need to use those cellphones for learning, not punishing.
Rhonda commented on Jan 29 12 at 5:45 pmI might be annoyed but I understand why the school is doing it, although they would also need to ban anything with pockets!!!
. “How about a cell phone ban in school, as reasonable footwear is more necessary than a cell phone?” The cell phones are already banned…so I am not really understanding this line.
I just think perhaps harsher punishments on students who are caught with any electronics. Take it away and make their parents come pick it up. The parents will get tired of having to come up to the school during work hours eventually.
anon commented on Jan 29 12 at 7:11 pmI think the school is just doing what it has to do in order to combat the smuggling stuff into class. Not a perfect solution, but what should they do instead? I think the girls can survive without their precious Uggs.
goddess commented on Jan 29 12 at 8:10 pmI don’t understand banning cell phones at all. Our schools make the kids turn them off and keep them out of sight. But there’s no way once my kid is driving and going to extra-curriculars that they are NOT going to have one. On a related note- when there was a crazy man loose with an ax in my son’s high school 5-6 years back, I knew about as it happened since he texted me. I was also able to let him know when he was caught.
So, are they banning all pockets too? Purses and places where girls might have their feminine products?
Dolores commented on Jan 29 12 at 8:29 pmI have worked in schools where parents have to pay a fine to pick up confiscated phones, etc. The fine increases with each repeat offense, and after three strikes the phone will be kept until the end of the school year in addition to paying the fine–parents must sign a contract at the beginning of the year agreeing to follow this and any other policies set by the school. Despite all of this, the students still constantly broke the rules, and the parents continued to gripe at the school administration–instead of their rule breaking children. The parents should support the rules of the school, instead of defending their children when they are in obvious violation of the rules.
Macy commented on Jan 29 12 at 9:03 pmI think that is ridiculous. Of course kids are still going to find a way to hide their phones. Instead of punishing try to relate cell phones into the education. In this day and age its hard to live without your ipods, cell phones etc. And that is stupid how uggs are being taken away…
goddess commented on Jan 30 12 at 8:14 amCan I fine teachers who text during class then as well? When I go to my elementary school son’s classroom for holiday parties, I see teachers all over the place texting away.
My kids don’t get cell phones until they can pay the bill for them and have a need- they are driving, sports practices, job, etc. And by that time, I WANT them to have a cell phone on them at all times. Turned off for school hours, of course. But they’d best have one in their pocket or purse for most of their high school years.
Lynn commented on Feb 01 12 at 8:54 amBanning students from wearing UGG boots during class because they pose potential hiding places for cell phone is nonsensical. I’m sure these students don’t wear their UGG boots during the warmer months of the school year & somehow manage to sneak a cell phone into their class. Students need to know that if they disrespect the rules for cell phone use that there are consequences. School may have to have stricter rules & enforcement for those that violate these rules. I do not understand why this school is punishing all students for the actions of some. Where does it end? Will this school choose to restrict all clothing with pockets because that would be another potential place to hide a cell phone?
