Is motherhood stressful?

Well, it definitely has its high pressure moments, with Today Moms reporting that
70 percent of U.S. moms say mothering is “incredibly stressful.”

Also? 96 percent agree that we’re more stressed out than our mothers were.

Wow.

Why are we so much more tense over matters of motherhood? Is it mostly because we’re all stretched so thin, most are worrying about financial matters and some aren’t getting enough support?

Stress happens, but there are ways to de-stress a bit, allowing us to be better moms because happy mommy means happy kids, right?

The Today Moms blog offers up several tips for managing mommy stress levels, including identifying stress signs (you know, the irritable mom moments, yelling, etc) and then taking a break to catch your breath.

They recommend putting up a “do not disturb” sign on the bedroom door (Wait? This is a possibility?), listening to relaxing music or visualizing your happy place.

Overall, it’s okay for mom to take a time out for herself to regroup. Don’t be afraid to take a mommy time out for your own sanity.

The site also encourages moms to identify those times that are most stressful and proactively diminish your irritability at those moments – for instance, getting things prepped the night before school so you’re not engaged in the morning scramble.

Other helpful de-stressing tips include meditation or deep breathing, exercising, finding a support group and taking the time to laugh.

I feel very stressed but not over motherhood. That is one of my favorite parts of my life. I am just stressed about the circumstances of having to work full time and keep a home.

The 30 percent who are not incredibly stressed out have clearly not yet removed their epidurals, and are not having the proper complete parenting experience. Yes, I am motivated to say this entirely out of envy.

Heck yea, modern motherhood is stressful! Especially now that we’re expected to bring home the bacon, Martha Stewart our home, and cook organic meals while juggling a baby on hip and wearing stilettos. There’s a lot of pressure and guilt to obtain the holy grail of modern motherhood – “work-life balance.” Does it exist? Has anyone seen it?
