Aveeno Recall

What you put on your baby’s skin (if anything) is an important decision. You don’t want something that could irritate or inflame their skin. And you certainly wouldn’t want a product that has too much of any sort of bacteria. But a quantity of Aveeno baby lotion — a brand that many parents swear by — had just that: too much bacteria.  Due to the recent findings, there has been a recall of one of the lots of the tubes of baby lotion.

It was announced on Friday that …

Johnson and Johnson would voluntarily recall one lot of their Aveeno Baby Calming Comfort Lotion (about 20,000 tubes).  CNN reported that the “Food and Drug Administration found it contained more of a form of bacteria than specifications allow.” And really, who wants to put more bacteria on your child’s skin? The bacteria in question was identified as coagulase-negative Staphylococci, which is,  “are common bacteria often found on the skin and scalp of babies and adults, and found in commonly used household and cosmetic products, at very low levels.”

But apparently the jury is still out on whether there actually was more bacteria, but Aveeno went ahead with the recall anyways. “That test indicated that the lot exceeded the specifications for common bacteria, though extensive testing by an independent laboratory afterward did not show that specifications were exceeded,” the company said in a news release. “However, Johnson & Johnson Consumer Companies Inc. has voluntarily initiated this recall out of an abundance of caution. This action is not being undertaken on the basis of adverse events and the potential for adverse health effects is remote.”

CNN reported that, “the lot number, embossed on the tube, is 0161LK. The product was distributed in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas, the company said. It urged consumers who would like a refund to call 877-298-2525.” But Aveeno has said that the recall is mostly at the retail level and the product would still be safe to use.
