Mark Wahlberg scares his kids into not getting tattoos?

Should parents have tattoos… or does it set a bad example for kids?

Mark Wahlberg is ridding his body of tattoos – for his kids, he says.

He’s got six or seven (his first when he was just 12!), but he doesn’t want his kids following in his footsteps.

Wahlberg calls it “the most excruciating thing” to get them removed, but feels it sends the right message to his four kids.

To drive the point home, he says he’s taken them along to the removal treatments.

That ought to do the trick!

In a recent Today show interview, Wahlberg told Matt Lauer, “(The tattoos) all have meaning to me, but you know it’s both personal and professional.”

He explained, “I don’t want to have my kids getting tattoos… I’m taking my two oldest kids with me to the procedure, where they can see how painful that is.”

Wahlberg’s tattoos include Sylvester the cat with Tweety Bird in his mouth, his initials and last name on his upper right arm, Bob Marley’s portrait with “One Love” on his upper left arm, a neck tattoo of a rosary with a crucifix and the words “In God I Trust.”

So, what do you think? Should parents have tattoos? If you have one, do you regret it? Do you hope your kids don’t get tattoos?

My dad got a tattoo when he was in the Navy and he said later he always regretted it and didn’t want his kids to get any. I never did. My brother is covered in them.

I think it’s a personal choice that’s up to each person. I don’t place a value judgment on them.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with having tattoos, otherwise I wouldn’t have them. Therefore I do not think it sends a bad message. I also don’t think that having tattoos will affect your children’s decisions about getting them. Most people I know with tattoos have parents who don’t have them, so they were obviously unaffected by their parents choice. If the discussion comes up with my daughter, I will let her know that I am proud of my tattoo and I thought about it for a very long time before I ever did it. Careful consideration is key.

Just amazing how photoshopped these Hollywood stars are. Even funnier, when they get something that probably made them more interesting to be around that they want differently now and for their kids. Did they get them for the attention, it’s part of who they are. I have a couple tattoos myself, don’t regret either. Just made sure I got them where it didn’t effect my corporate career, too many other obstacles to overcome that tattoos never played into the equation. Anyway, you live once, enjoy the ride, because at the end of it all, doesn’t really matter. Does it eliminate one sad and pathetic excuse to be rejected ? Sure, but don’t worry, the one’s that will tell you “no” have dozens of other excuses too and those will stand on their own just the same. MW has more tattoos and from the article writeup, in places I wouldn’t even imagine having a tattoo done. In his case he went too far if this is the way he feels about them. But to say everyone shouldn’t get any, there’s that fine line between a positive life experience that is a moment in your life and one where it’s a mistake that makes it impossible to recover from based upon the appearances that society has. When MW is in his 60′s and beyond, maybe Hollywood has shelved him, he’ll have these scars to remind him what he’s done to forget that part of his life that made it more interesting ?

BTW, what/which one is real ? The Marley tattoo is on different shoulders in these photos ? Most internet pics have it on his left shoulder.

Doncha think Mark should be more concerned with getting his penis removed from “Boogie Nights” when it comes to parental influence on one’s children? Bwa ha ha ha!

I’m at odds about this… being a decently tattooed mom…

Obviously, getting inked in a life choice – it’s “permanent,” unless you do want to go through the expensive painful removal procedure. I feel like just erasing them isn’t really addressing the issue. And what happens if and when your child wants to follow the same path? Just because they may have been shown the painfulness and expense of getting ink removed, doesn’t mean that it will lead them away from wanting one.
Had M.W. been subjected to the same thing he wants to subject his children to, would he still have not made the choice to get a tattoo? Who knows.
I say – educate your kids on ink. Don’t assume they won’t just because you don’t want them to. Help them understand the permanent nature of the idea to help them decide for themselves. Take away the “coolness” factor that always seems to be the only reason young kids want and get tattoos, and show them the art and reason behind it.
What happens when your kid is faced with an issue that he can’t use money to remove? What then?

Yay for good sense!!! I personally think tattoos are hideous looking, but to each their own.

Makes sense. If you don’t want your kids to get tats… then having them yourself is hypocritical. If you don’t mind your kids having them… then keep them. I have a tattoo… and if my son wants one when he’s 18… then more power to him.

What would we do if we didn’t have celebrities to drive our discourse?

His tattoos were so lame. Bob Marley is my favorite singer ever but to get a Bob Marley tat is LAME. Your tattoos speak volumes about who you are and reflect the depth of your character.

I cant blame him for having them removed. Tweety bird and Sylvester? LAME!

Put some thought into it. Invest the time and effort to get a good design and a world class artist.
