Build-A-Bear Issues Third Recall This Year
For the third time this year, Build-A-Bear workshop has issued a recall, this time forĀ 300,000 “Colorful Hearts” teddy bears. According to an announcement by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the eyes could loosen and pose a choking hazard to young children, a defect Build-A-Bear spokeswoman Jill Saunders attributes to “substandard fabric.”
On December 16, the CPSC announced that Build-A-Bear had agreed to pay a $6,000 civil penalty for a failure to report a dangerous defect in a line of toy beach chairs sold between 2001 and 2009 that could cause pinching, lacerations or even amputation of a child’s fingers when the chairs were folded. The company was aware of 10 incidents of injury between July 2007 and January 2009, but did not report them until March 2009.
Prior to that announcement, the company issued a voluntary recall of their “Love Hugs Peace Lapel Pin” for excessive levels of lead-based paint.
To date, no injuries have been reported from the “Colorful Hearts” teddy bear, but the fact that the company has had three recalls in one year does raise the question of whether Build-A-Bear should be more thorough during their product quality and safety checks.
