Luxury strollers are the in thing

The hottest trend in baby strollers? Those of the luxury variety, with moms even getting on waitlists for strollers that cost $1,600 or more.

The Bugaboo Donkey is one of the hottest strollers around, but it’s cheap compared to Kid Kustoms’ Roddler, which weighs in at a whopping $4,500.

Uppababy’s VISTA is slightly more reasonable, at $679.99, but seriously, why are people paying this much for strollers?

Because they can. They may claim the features, easy folding, and reliability as the reasons for their justification, but these high end strollers are as much a fashion and status statement as anything.

Bugaboo is dubbed “the Prada of the pavement” and was featured on an episode of “Sex and the City.” After the episode aired, there was a waitlist of folks wanting it… and the rest is history.

It doesn’t hurt that celebs like Rachel Zoe, Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Gwen Stefani, Jeniifer Garner and Hugh Jackman have been spotted with Bugaboos.

High-end strollers do hold their resale value and reportedly outlast any of the economy variety of strollers.

So there’s that.

Moms at a “stroller-cise” class (yes, that’s a real thing) in NYC were asked about their investment in the pricey strollers, with one mom noting, “I think people are impressed by it… Because I think the mom is happy and the baby is happy.”

Another mom added, “I do think it is a luxury item though, it is a luxury stroller. I think it is for people who money is less of an issue and they are looking for something with style because it is sort of a statement piece.”

A statement piece that you push your kid around in. Huh.

Would you shell out $1,600 or more for the hottest stroller in town?

Not for those ugly things

Strollers are for wimps. I hope these aren’t for the 99%! Wahh!

This kind of stuff really worries me. It’s Marie Antionette levels of indifference to the suffering of others. Who in their right mind spends $4500 on a stroller when the US has the highest rates of unemployment since the Depression? This kind of wanton indulgence tends not to end well for the rich. I wouldn:t be impressed by anyone pushing a thousand dollar stroller. I would think that person is an epic a-hole. Buy a reasonably priced one and find a family who is suffering this Christmas and give them the rest.

God, I was pretty freaked out spending $400 for our stroller and bassinet attachment almost six years ago. Granted, we are still using that thing but I couldn’t imagine spending twice that much less ten times that.

Yes. Conspicuous consumption and ostentatious wealth may someday make them a target for crime! And not sure I’d shed a tear.

They can spend their money on whatever they want. The price of these items represent a small amount of their net worth in most cases and do not prevent them from also being charitable, responsible citizens. Marie Antoinette was a member of the government, whereas these people are private citizens who are likely paying 35% federal income tax. If the impoverished of the nation really want to take more of their money they need to vote for leaders who will increase taxes on the wealthy and/or large corporations and reduce the number of tax breaks for the same. However, 35% income tax is already quite a chunk of change, no matter what your income is.

Man, I spent $150 on an umbrella stroller about 4 years ago and thought that was a little much. Of course, most of my travels with the kid were in a BabyHawk carrier anyway, which was only $80…

LAM, I can’t afford a $1400 stroller and I pay 28% plus AMT.

I forked over the big bucks for the Bugaboo Bee. Judge me if you will, but for families living in cities, size and convience really matter. It was the most narrow model on the market for fitting down bus aisles and fits inside our ONE closet without being folded. We figured spending to get a stroller that works best was worth it, especially since we don’t have a car. I often look at peoples’ cars and think the same thing as the above comments.

Oh, and we pay 50% income tax on top of the 20% sales tax. I have no sympathy for the US whiners.

I cannot see the video, but wow!!!!, cannot believe buying a $4500 stroller is an “in” trend :O

I have an orbit g2 that was a present, and it’s mostly used for carrying bags and toys while my baby rides on my chest in a baby carrier :D wish I wouldve known he would NOT ride in it!!!

As a former nanny, I’ve had my fair share of experiences using all types of strollers and honestly the truth is, the more expensive ones do hold up better than the cheaper ones on the market. The frames are stronger, and frankly, they can withstand a greater deal of use and will last through multiple children, not to mention, you can get a good amount of money back if you decided to resell it. Now, I get that a lot of moms don’t believe in the hype or just can’t afford to spend $400+ and that’s okay too, but if you CAN swing of a better quality stroller, ESPECIALLY IF YOU’RE A CITY DWELLER, then I say go for it b/c it will be worth every penny. I’ve had few friends who purchased cheaper strollers to only realize they don’t hold up and they wind up having to shell out even more money to purchase better quality strollers later on.
