kim jong il 300x168 Busy Parent Briefing: North Korean Dictator, Kim Jong Il, DiesNorth Korean dictator, Kim Jong Il, 69, has died. As CNN reports, though “every possible first-aid measure” was rendered, Kim died Saturday morning of a heart attack according to state TV.

North Korea’s state-run KCNA news agency said that he died due to “great mental and physical strain” while in a train during a “field guidance tour.”

Kim Jong Il came to power 17 years ago after his father, Kim Il Song, the founder of the communist nation, died of a heart attack at 82.

There have been reports in recent years that he was in poor health, as well as that his son, Kim Jong Un, was likely to transition into power.

His funeral is scheduled for December 28 with the national mourning period extended through December 29. Following Kim’s death, all South Korean military units were placed on “emergency alert.”
