13 Pound Baby Born In Germany, Aptly Named Jihad

A strapping thirteen pound baby boy was born in Berlin, Germany on Friday. His birth is being discussed and debated around the world for a number of reasons, including his chosen name, Jihad.
At thirteen pounds, the baby was the 14th child of the 40-year-old mother, Elfi Yaghi. Yaghi herself was 528 pounds when the baby was born. It was a natural, vaginal birth at her insistence. Doctors had warned her that a cesarean section would be best for any baby weighing in over ten pounds.
Incidentally, Elfi Yaghi suffered from gestational diabetes which accounted for the large baby. Doctors say she claims she did not know she had the condition but they simply don’t believe her, reports ABC News:
“Both mother and baby are lucky that all went well,” said Dr. Joel Zonszein, professor of clinical medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. “But such a large baby is not a healthy baby, and the mother was irresponsible but lucky in the way she handled her pregnancy and the delivery. A mother that has 14 children should know better. “
Besides the large birth weight, being born to a diabetic mother and growing up as one of 14 siblings, baby Jihad might also have to overcome his name. The family are Muslim but haven’t given any reasons why they named they son Jihad. Typically known as an Islamic term for a holy war, the word often conjures up negative emotions for many people. As a noun itself, the word simply means struggle, and it looks like baby Jihad has experienced that already in his first few days of life.

Jessica commented on Nov 28 11 at 1:31 pmI think it would have been more ideal for her to try and lose some weight before having another child and she definitely should have worked to control the GD during pregnancy, but in the end, it is her business. I wish her and her 14 kids the best and hope the little guy doesn’t have any health issues.
