These Go to 11/11/11! Celebrate Nigel Tufnel Day Tomorrow
These go to 11!
Attention Christopher Guest fans! In honor of 11/11/11 – and Guest’s breakthrough 1984 film This Is Spinal Tap – tomorrow is being hailed as Nigel Tufnel Day, named after Guest’s character in the movie, who famously quipped, “These go to eleven” about his beloved amps.
Yahoo! MOVIEtalk says, “We first learned of the unofficial holiday through Facebook, where folks are preparing to honor the great guitarist. One fan writes, ‘Friday, in Honor of Nigel Tufnel Day and Veterans Day, I will be turning it up to 11 and rocking the Star-Spangled banner.’”
The question is, as Yahoo! asks, “So, what does one do on Nigel Tufnel Day?” Well, we know our very own Stephanie Precourt plans to take her grandmother to visit her veteran grandfather’s grave and women in Korea will be vying to give birth via C-section. Whatever your plans, Yahoo! suggests 11/11/11 is “a day to do whatever you normally do — only do it a little better. Take a look at your regular chores, your job, your schoolwork, and crank your enthusiasm up to 11. Extreme elevenness, that’s the goal. Oh, and play a lot of loud music, too.”
What should you play? Tunes from Spinal Tap, of course! (Yes, they released most of the songs from the film on an album, which you can buy on Amazon and have delivered by tomorrow if you order in the next two hours. I had no idea, but there are actually four Spinal Tap albums available, one from their 2009 film Spinal Tap: Back from the Dead.) Here’s my favorite song from the original mockumentary, Big Bottom (for, uh, obvious reasons), plus the infamous scene that inspired Nigel Tufnel Day. Enjoy!

I LITERALLY SAW RIENER THE DIRECTOR KICKING A CAMERAMAN “IN THE ASS”!!! TO GET A SPONTANEOUS SHOT DURING AN UNSCRIPTED ROWDY CONCERT SCENE…THE BAND WAS SO GOOD WE JUST WENT CRAZY.
