Penn State Scandal: University President Graham Spanier Will Resign or Be Fired

Things are getting worse at Penn State amidst former coach's child abuse scandal.

As Strollerderby’s Katherine Stone noted in a post on Monday, “Penn State’s football team’s former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky has been indicted for inappropriate touching and rape of eight boys over a 15-year period.” Nittany Lions coach Joe Paterno reportedly knew about the child sexual abuse allegations against Sandusky and did not report them to police. As a result, Paterno announced his retirement earlier today.

Now a source close to the college’s board of trustees has told local media that Penn State University President Graham Spanier will either resign or be voted out by the end of the day.

According to Lehigh Valley Live, an anonymous informer indicated that ”an interim president, most likely Executive Vice President and Provost Rodney A. Erickson, will be appointed and a nationwide search for a permanent replacement will begin.” In 2002, Spanier – along with athletic director Tim Curley and Vice President Gary Schultz – were made aware “that a graduate assistant coach had seen former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky allegedly sexually assault a young boy in a shower in the Penn State locker room.” Sandusky has been charged with 40 counts of sexually abusing children.

The board of trustees has reportedly told Spanier to keep quiet on the matter, The Chronicle of Higher Education reports.  They say, “Mr. Spanier has told people close to him that the first time he heard about the 1998 allegations—which were investigated by Penn State’s police department and other law-enforcement officials, but resulted in no arrest—was last month.”
