Fail?

I know not everyone will agree with me on this, but I have to say I find even the most artfully done pregnancy portraits totally, utterly, completely AWKWARD.  You can thank (or let’s be real, blame) Demi Moore, Claudia Schiffer and Britney Spears for the recent rise in everyday women taking photos of themselves half- or fully naked while pregnant.  Even the recently released pic (left) of a pregnant Jessica Simpson in her “mummy” costume (get it?!) is just so… weird.  Why are you making a sexy face, Jess? You’re covered in toilet paper! And kinda look like you have to poop. Why not smile, show that you’re happy to be pregnant? Or make a scary face for Halloween? Something!

Anyhoo… some of the solo belly shots I’ve seen are okay, especially if they focus just on the belly and not on the future mother wistfully looking off in the distance while cupping her rotund flesh with her swollen hands.  But almost every partner shot I’ve ever seen is somewhat bizarre, especially those that feature a couple with booze, costumes/props and/or guns. So many guns…

Here are 25 of the weirdest, creepiest and most unsettling pregnancy portraits I could find.  Enjoy?

I. Laughed. So. Hard. at the fetal position one. Then I shared it on Facebook to all my friends. Thanks for making me feel better about not being pregnant. HAHAHAHAHAHA!

Whats wrong with the watercolor one? Is there something Im not seeing?

Ana K commented on Nov 04 11 at 1:15 pm

I think the lady with the jack-o-lantern costume looks great! And I’ve seen the Magic Mirror one on here before and I think it’s sort of eerie but neat.

Diera commented on Nov 04 11 at 1:40 pm

Some of these are T-R-A-S-H-Y!

Rachel commented on Nov 04 11 at 5:23 pm

I don’t know… I felt sooo ugly when I was pregnant, it might have been nice to have the confidence to get my picture taken.

Richan commented on Nov 04 11 at 6:34 pm

Aww… well, as I told a friend today, I think the best way to commemorate your pregnancy is just through the normal candid shots you’d take when out with friends, at your shower, etc. But, to each his own!

I am personally not a fan of pregnancy photos, but I think if someone wants to do them, great. I just wish they’d stop putting them on the internet for all to see. I do like the Halloween one, though. Very cute and obviously it wasn’t a professionally done naked portrait.

‘Grassy’ looks like the mom from Home Improvement. Maybe she’s got Jonathan Taylor Thomas in there!

Judy commented on Nov 05 11 at 1:20 am

Yawn.. while most of these are trashy, a few are not, so why poke fun?? Wow he has a tattoo of a tree on his back, HALARIOUS!!

Lynn commented on Nov 05 11 at 1:21 am

I don’t think that one’s trashy, but I do find it awkward. I didn’t bill these as the 25 trashiest. I think the whole “praying to the goddess that is my baby mama” pose that so many pregnancy portraits employ is bizarre at best.

funny! I had pics taken of my first and I never displayed them, because I hated the big belly shots…

Emily Moore commented on Nov 06 11 at 12:09 am

ok you act like these woman should be ashamed of being pregnant, well i think that the couples looks so very cute.dont be ashamed of what you look like we are all beautiful in some ones eyes

jeff24 commented on Nov 06 11 at 12:32 am

In the picture labled “Huh?” I read the blog post, and saw the rest of the pictures. Why is she wearing those jeans???? It looks so uncomfortable to have them undone like that, and they are sooo tight! Does everyone do that and I’m just the crazy one?

Stacey commented on Nov 06 11 at 1:34 am

Okay I really like the jack o latern one and the Magic Mirror made me tear up a bit, but the others are truely horrible. THe ones of the teenagers make my heart hurt.

Ok, before I can write my comment I must read the allegation that Babble is a supportive, diverse community.

So why the mean-spirited post making fun of women and couples celebrating impending parenthood? Some of these shots are beautiful, some are cute, some are quite intentionally funny. Maybe I’m just being too sensitive here, but why would Babble — or such a fine write as CC usually is — want to call these ‘fail’ ?

Seems to me you might want to look at some of Babble’s other posts — like, say, the ones on Bullying?

I am 17 and have a 15month old child. He is a happy healthy boy who is given everything he could need or want. His father is 23 and we are wonderful parents. We did not get pregnant to be part of a “fad”. Yes, we failed to have “safe sex” but we took on the responsibilities and love every minute of it. I’m a senior in high school & woll be graduating this spring then attending college. You shouldn’t talk about teen girls with children as a whole. There are definitely many that shouldnt raise children. But there are alot of adult women who most definitely shouldn’t either. “Before you criticize our generation, remember who raised it.”

jujujulz commented on Feb 22 12 at 11:08 pm

the pic of the alcohol and pregnant chick is disgusting

jujujulz commented on Feb 22 12 at 11:10 pm

are people honestly okay with a couple posing with booze in their hands and the pregnant woman drinking it???? how is that acceptable, the woman should be ashamed. I dont drink during pregnancy

jujujulz commented on Feb 22 12 at 11:11 pm

Double trouble looks like they are about 12.

Debbie Jo commented on Mar 21 12 at 9:02 pm

I’m totally going to plank like that when I get big!

BioPHD commented on Apr 06 12 at 6:13 pm

I agree with Debbie Jo about the “double trouble” they do look about 12 and are still taking those kind of pictures. Sorry to say this but that’s probably how you got pregnant in the first place. These pictures are disturbing especially the one of the mom with alcohol in her hands-I mean WHAT is that supposed to show? And the xmas card one like REALLY?! I wouldnt want that on my fridge or even in my mail box…keep that to yourself!!

MoMMa BeaR commented on Apr 10 12 at 1:59 pm

As a photographer, I have seen many gorgeous pregnancy shots. However, sometimes it’s the parents who provide the bizarre element, like the guns or booze. On the one hand the photographer is being paid to take the images that the couple/woman wants, but there is something to be said when the image turns out so awkward. There some say that you have in how the images turn out, but the primary people involved with what props go into the picture is almost entirely up to those in the image itself. We, as photographers, have little to say as to what people want to use in their portraits, but seriously some of the poses were awkward and I would flat out refuse to take a picture of a pregnant woman with alcohol. That has never mixed and I don’t think it should be even joked about.

Kim commented on Apr 16 12 at 11:10 pm

ANA K- I totally agree with you about the watercolor picture. I think its beautiful! Can ANYONE explain to me why it made the ‘trashy’ list? They look very much in love and happy. I’m thinking someone found it ‘trashy’ because he has his shirt off… which i dont get either. One thing I learned having a premature child is that skin on skin shows affection and helps both parents bond with their child… I know hes not pressing his bare chest against his child but she is his childs’ carrier. Bonding with her and showing her affection are just as important…

I wish my ex would have been proud enough to have a picture with me pregnant. he said I was fat & ugly so he wanted no pictures of the two of us (or even me alone) when I was pregnant. Yes, some of these are a bit weird & awkward. But obviously both parties wanted to be there & we should be applauding the emotion behind the pics rather than the ill-conceived ideas of a few.

Sue commented on May 05 12 at 3:26 pm

I’ve seen the Magic Mirror one before and am probably do something like that if I have any more kids.
