Macy’s to Open Midnight Thanksgiving: Early Bird Shopping vs. Shortened Holiday
It looks like Macy’s has become the latest retailer to declare they will open at midnight on Thanksgiving. Target made the same announcement just last week. In past years, Toys ‘R Us, Walmart, and Sears have begun the rush to start Black Friday shopping earlier each year.
Is cutting the Thanksgiving holiday short (and braving the crowds) worth the bargains?
I’ve never embarked on a 5am Black Friday shopping excursion but I have shopped (and hated it) on Black Friday itself. Usually I detest shopping but I always admire the great finds that I see on the news of people who got incredible deals on laptops and iPads. This year I’m wondering if a midnight trip is worth the trouble.
On one hand, you have to cut your Thanksgiving short. Yes, the stores open at midnight, but you will have to get ready beforehand, put away the Thanksgiving mess if hosting, travel to the store, find a parking spot, and wait in line. If you want a chance at getting the best deals, you should get there way before midnight, so depending on when you have Thanksgiving dinner and your guests go home, you might have to hurry the night along.
The upside? So many readers weighed in our our 10 Things A Mother-in-Law Should Never Utter post, and a lot of you shared stories of horrible things said during the holidays, so if you’re looking for a reason to skip out early, some Black Friday shopping might be ideal!
I firmly intend to finish my shopping by the end of November this year — no matter what. I want to actually enjoy the holiday season without the stress.
What about you? Do you love or hate Black Friday shopping? What’s the best deal you ever found?

Suzie commented on Nov 01 11 at 11:30 amNever. I would never jump through any hoops of going to a store at some ungodly hour to get a deal. I never shop on Black Friday. I try to do most of my (minimalist) holiday shopping online or throughout the year. I hate the frenzy and will not participate. I do know that some people actually think the action of the sales and excitement is fun, and so, bully for them.
Mary B. commented on Nov 01 11 at 12:08 pmWe don’t have Black Friday in Canada, so I like to watch the madness from far away. It’s not something I think I would enjoy, although since my in-laws live in border towns (New Brunswick-Maine) there is a possibility that I *might* do it, someday, but as a “once in a lifetime” experience.

goddess commented on Nov 01 11 at 1:11 pmI never do Black Friday. But if someone in my family REALLY wanted something badly that I REALLY wanted to give them but couldn’t afford full price, I might be tempted to give it a whirl. For now, I’ll leave the opportunity to those who need it more!
Megan commented on Nov 02 11 at 2:58 pmI would never be able to afford Christmas presents for my kids and the kids in the extended family that we buy for, without the deals on Black Friday. It can be a lot of fun, just be patient, and if its an electronics item you want, you’re better off trying to get it online at the exact time the online sale starts, which is usually way earlier than the in-store sales, as most store will only have 2-5 items of each big deal electronics item on sale.
