Will this children's book for adults achieve the success of Go the F to Sleep?
When I met Adam Mansbach, author of the instantly classic children’s book for adults, “Go the F to Sleep,” I asked him if he planned on doing a follow-up book, like “Eat Your G.D. Vegetables” or “Stop Hitting Your F’ing Brother.” He told me no, that he’d rather not try to repeat his success with some half-hearted attempt at cashing in on the new curse-laden literary genre he’d created. But Mansbach’s unwillingness to sell out hasn’t prevented another set of authors from taking his f*cking great idea and running with it.
Which brings us to the new book, “If You Give a Kid a Cookie, Will He Shut the F Up?,” by Marcy Roznick and Miranda Lemming, out now from St. Martin’s Press. Not only does the book (admittedly) bite Mansbach’s style, it parodies the popular “If You Give a [Blank] a [Blank]” series by Laura Numeroff and Felicia Bond. In their description of the book, St. Martin’s says, “Before they Go the F**k to Sleep, they need to Shut the F**k Up. If you give a kid a cookie, will he shut the f**k up? That is the question at the heart of this hilarious, deeply honest, profanity-laced book for parents who will do whatever it takes for a moment’s peace.”
When “Go the F to Sleep” was first released, author Amy Sohn wrote an essay for Babble wondering if a woman could get away with writing the same type of book. Now two women have, and it’s even more brash than the original, with references to drunk uncles and – of all things – cockfighting. Check out these images from “If You Give a Kid a Cookie, Will He Shut the F Up?” and let us know what you think about it!
You can read the rest of the book here, and order from Amazon here. An audio book is forthcoming, to be recorded by Bobcat Goldthwait. In related news, I was just informed yesterday that my video interview with Adam Mansbach will be included in the new e-book version of “Go the F to Sleep.”
So, what do you think? Would you buy “If You Give a Kid a Cookie?”
Do you think these children’s books are any worse?

Shannon commented on Oct 26 11 at 3:48 pmI think this book is a lot less mean-spirited than “Go the F to Sleep”. It was pretty funny.
Blue commented on Oct 28 11 at 1:06 pmOne book like this is funny. A second one, especially so soon after the first one…derivative. (Also, there is something about sleep/bedtime that is particularly inspiring of frustration, so I’m not sure that this one could be as funny…seems more like swearing just as a marketing ploy.) Even “Go the * to Sleep” got old after the first several pages, but at least it started out funny.
Jennifer commented on Oct 28 11 at 6:43 pmIt was written by two men, not two women. They work for The publishing company. Fake names.
Janinabee commented on Jan 17 12 at 2:58 pmThis seems way too mean spirited. Why do we need something like this? Aren’t we celebrating bad behavior enough with all these reality shows? What’s next, T-shirts that proclaim, I CAN’T STAND MY F*CKN’ KID? Enough with this celebration of negativity!
melissa commented on May 01 12 at 7:59 amI loved it….haven’t we all thought this very thing. As a parody I thought it rocked. Made me laugh. Christopher Walken was an awesome choice to have read it. I love books that speak to me directly and this book covers it all. lmao
