First openly gay man has enlisted in the U.S. Military since the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell.

Lee Reinhart has re-enlisted in the U.S. Military after being discharged from the Coast Guard when he refused to deny rumors that he was gay. He is also the first openly gay service member to enlist since the repeal of “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” (DADT).

“Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” — the 1993 law that allowed homosexuals to serve in the military only if they kept their sexual orientation a secret – was officially repealed on September 20, 2011.  Reinhart shared his reasons for re-enlisting due to his “desire to be able to give back to my country and serve my country, and the honor and pride that comes with that.” The simple ceremony took place in Chicago. He enlisted in the Navy, and must go through training again and then transfer to an Ohio-based naval reserve unit where he now lives.
