The quake registered at 7.2.

At least 217 people were killed in Sunday’s earthquake in Turkey. The 7.2 quake also injured over 350 people.

So far, approximately 20 aftershocks have occurred since the quake. One aftershock had a magnitude of 6.0.

The U.S. Geological Service reports that the quake struck the eastern Van province at 1:41 p.m. (1041 GMT; 6:41 a.m. EDT), causing widespread panic throughout the province and neighboring cities.

CNN reports that “Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan told reporters the death toll is likely to climb, as rescue teams work through the night to save people still trapped in the rubble. The prime minister said 55 buildings collapsed in Ercis on the north shore of Lake Van, while the Turkish Red Crescent had said earlier that some 25 apartment buildings and a student dormitory collapsed in the town.”

Van is one of the poorest parts of the country.

Thank you for covering this news. As of now, the death toll has risen to 366, with close to 1500 injured. International donations can be given through the Turkish Red Crescent Society’s web site, as well as through Global Giving.

It is a real tragedy, but there’s room for miracles as well: A 14 day-old baby girl has just been rescued, after being buried under the rubble for 46 hours. Her mother was rescued soon after, her father is still in the rubble.
