So What’s So Wrong with a Tattooed Pink Haired Barbie?
First off, this is not your average everyday Barbie. She’s not a vet, she’s not a nurse, and she’s not from Malibu. This Barbie is pink haired, has a cactus as a pet and is adorned with a slew of tattoos — something that is getting some parents pretty riled up.
The collector’s Barbie was designed in collaboration with the Japanese inspired Italian designer tokidoki. This doll is more for the collector set and joins other collaborations with designers like Kate Spade and Bob Mackie and isn’t really being marketed to children. But Barbie is still totally associated with little girls and childhood, so it’s no wonder that a handful of parents were outraged by this edgy new doll.
Some of the irate comments they’ve made include (via Ms. Twixt: Positive Experiences for Tween Girls):
“Is Mattel crazy? Selling Barbie dolls with tattoos? That was almost as bad as having a pregnant Barbie or Skipper! Is someone on drugs at Mattel??? Can’t really believe this at all! Why don’t they make a suicide Barbie, complete with rope and gun! Maybe that will really do these girls a favor in showing what a role model she is! Parents apparently don’t take such good notice in all this! Shouldn’t have kids if they do allow them to have this kind of doll!”
“Encouraging children that tattoos are cool is wrong, wrong, wrong. Mattel why not put a cigarette and a beer bottle in her hand while you’re at it!”
But not everyone has upset by this tattooed punky doll.
“Wow, really? I don’t drink, I don’t smoke, I don’t do drugs, I’ve never been arrested (let alone gotten a ticket), and I have a happy, healthy, extremely smart little boy. I also happen to have tattoos. One thing I can tell you for sure is that my son will learn to never look down his nose at people the way that most of you have. How sad.”
“I much prefer tattoos to unrealistic proportions and the message that the most important thing is to be pretty and get a boy. Good for you Mattel for making a doll a little more like the rest of us. I consider it a tiny step in the right direction.”

goddess commented on Oct 18 11 at 3:10 pmOh geez……get over it peeps. To the first commentor: The fairy Barbies had tatts too. And I guess since I have them, I’m such a sucky role model I may as well share my wine at dinner eh? Hate to burst your bubble on smoking and suicide though.
Bravo to the second 2 commentors~
LooLoosMommy commented on Oct 18 11 at 3:28 pmOMG! Where can I get that! My daughter would adore that! People need to get over it. I feel like that’s the only barbie who has even remotely looked like me lol. My daughter rocks a pink wig daily she would adore this.
KellyK commented on Oct 18 11 at 3:31 pmShe is beautiful!
Linda commented on Oct 18 11 at 4:07 pmthis is inspired by a very popular artist Tokidoki line. I think its more of an art and probably more for the fans that already own/collect his work.
I think its awesome…
scarolinagirl commented on Oct 18 11 at 4:09 pmCome people get the stick out of your butts, and join the rest of the world. So Barbie got tatted up, I like it. I see a beautiful doll that will teach our girls that it is more to just good looks. People come in all shapes, sizes, and looks, that we should not judge those who look different. I need to know where I can find one for both of my girls.
Lindsey commented on Oct 18 11 at 4:15 pmI would gladly buy this doll for my little girl. Her aunt has tattoos and sometimes multicolored hair. It teaches her to be accepting and see the beauty in people that have creativity and originality. Heck, I might even buy it for myself! Awesome :)
I happen to have a tattoo as well, does that make me any less qualified as a mother. Maybe you guys need to pull the stick out of your a@@.
peace.
Kristina commented on Oct 18 11 at 4:18 pmOh my I need 2to please my brother is a tattoo artist and my nieces would just freaking love this gotcharoflmao@aol.com if anyone figures it out !!
Josette at Halushki.com commented on Oct 18 11 at 4:25 pmThis is ridiculous only because any child in their right mind already knows how to color Barbie’s hair pink and decorate Barbie with Sharpie tattoos.
Money down the drain – creativity dies another quick death at the hand of a dollar bill. (Hint, hint: 1,252 Barbies for $1.00 each at your local Good Will or sidewalk sale.)
Melissa commented on Oct 18 11 at 4:30 pmI’ve got to say,I like it! It’s not bad at all.Im pretty sure most parents drink & smoke in front of their kids anyways! You are their biggest role models! Nothing is wrong at all about this.People who have tattoos aren’t bad.
Laney commented on Oct 18 11 at 4:31 pmWow…I shouldn’t be allowed to be a parent because I would allow my daughter to have this doll. Seriously people? At least she has on some clothes…you want to pick something to be offended about, how about the scantily clad Barbies. My four year old can’t run out and get a tattoo…even if mommy does have them..and even if temporary ones often adorn her and her brothers sweet little arms. Ugh get over it.
Erin commented on Oct 18 11 at 4:33 pmI think it’s a great I dea, and if parents don’t want to teach their kids that pink hair and tattoos is OK then just don’t buy the damned thing…no one ever said that just cause a toy store puts it on a shelf that a parent HAS to buy it! I would buy it for my little girl…that is if I can even get her to look at a barbie sinc she’d rather play with cars and trucks. What’s wrong with living a different lifestyle!?
Melissa commented on Oct 18 11 at 4:35 pmplus parents buy their kids temporary tattoos!
Kris commented on Oct 18 11 at 4:44 pm@Kellyk I don’t have a stick up my butt, but I think the idea of a tattooed Barbie is ridiculous. Let’s all be so accepting of everyone and sit around a fire singing Kumbya with each other. A tattoo is ungodly and the Bible says it is.Piercings are also spoken of and not Biblical. Everyone just does whatever “feels good” and doesn’t have any regard or what the Lord has to say about anything. Everyone is more than welcome to “follow their heart” , but when the time comes, we are all accountable to God for whatever we say AND whatever we do. I am definitely not a perfect person, noone is, but I try hard to follow what is acceptable in the Lord’s eyes. The toy companies will get you to spend your money on anything. Josette has a really good point.
KP commented on Oct 18 11 at 4:47 pmI think it’s cool, and I really like her hair style. Aside from the color, I might bring the picture to my next hair appt!
kris commented on Oct 18 11 at 4:50 pmU won’t let ur child have a doll like this but u prob let them wear them water tattoos in my book its the same thing !!!!
Celticrai commented on Oct 18 11 at 4:57 pmThis Barbie is remakably close to how I look (waist size and bust may vary) Do my tattos and dyed hair make me a bad parent?
Savannah commented on Oct 18 11 at 5:03 pmI won’t be buying this babie simply because I have 2 sons. If I had a daughter I probably still wouldn’t buy it simply because I’m sure it’s stupid expensive and like someone already commented Goodwill + sharpie= same effect!! I myself am a Christian and I have a tattoo and intend to add more. God is not going to send me to hell for having tattoos. The Barbie is intended more for collectors anyway. (or did you not read that part!) To say that tattoos and pink hair is “ungodly” is wrong. I know lots of very awesome Christian mommy’s that have tattoos and yes sometimes pink hair. Its what’s on the inside that counts!
Laycie commented on Oct 18 11 at 5:07 pmI love the idea how can people be so quick to judge. I am religious, no one drinks around my kids,i don’t drink at all, don’t do drugs, I am going for a medical degree etc, and I HAVE TATS! this isn’t the 50′s people they can walk out thier door and see an amazing person covered in tattoos. I don’t see how coloring your hair and tattoos can make someone less than, or ungodly, or a bad parent. My son and soon to be second child are well taken care of and loved despite my bright colored hair and tattoos. Good gravy.
Cait commented on Oct 18 11 at 5:10 pmWow, this is unbelievable! I think this Barbie is fantastic. The comments and perceptions from some of these people are mind boggling. Talk about judgemental! I have tattoos all over my body and guess what, I’m a great person! I work full-time, attend Nursing school full-time, and have an amazingly wonderful 3 year old son. Tattoos don’t mean you are a bad person, disgusting, stupid, or anything of that nature. This is like judging someone for their race. Although tattoos are a choice and race is not, it does not define you. I’m pretty sure my cardiologist, one of the top in the country would agree, since he has tattoos as well. This Barbie is great, it shows not to judge and that regardless of what someone chooses to do with their skin, they are beautiful!! I am so tired of people without tattoos thinking they are better then someone who does have them. Get over yourself! All of my tattoos have a very deep and personal meaning and I will never regret them.
Sky commented on Oct 18 11 at 5:22 pmAnyone who has a problem with people having non-offensive tattoos has too much time on their hands. Why in the world do you care whats someone else does with their skin? Judging people will make you look worse than any tattoo will.
goddess commented on Oct 18 11 at 5:59 pmKris-= not everyone believes in your “god” or your “bible”. My god and goddess have all sorts of tatts ;-)
Elizabeth commented on Oct 18 11 at 6:01 pmfor people to bring their biblical quotes into this is all completely unnecessary. Doesnt the bible also quote love thy neighbor? correct me if im wrong, but i dont think theres a colony or cul-de-sac of people that have chosen not to have a single tattoo or piercing? ITS A BARBIE DOLL. its not your child that your just picking up at the corner toy store. they also have unicorns that go with Barbie playsets, does that mean your child is going to jail for child abuse for trying to nail a horn into a horses head? no! your child will form what they believe to be acceptable based on what you as parents have accepted, but also on their own in their own time. and as far as God’s judgement, if it was realllllly that horrible, then with His power, the ability to tattoo and color hair would never have come to be. kick all your judgement down a notch, and let kids be kids. your never going to take your child to the grocery store because they just MIGHT see a woman with pink hair and tattoos with piercings? really?! the more you shelter your child and “protect” them, the more naive you are making them to the REAL world. take a minute of your lives to bash on something else like people that get away with murder every 5 seconds instead of what your 4 year old is seeing on a Barbie Doll!
Lady luxe commented on Oct 18 11 at 6:09 pmI LOVE HER, Best barbie Ive seen created so far.
Don’t like it ? Don’t buy it.
Lady luxe commented on Oct 18 11 at 6:13 pmomg SOME OF THE COMMENTS ON HERE.
I would much prefer to be inked from head to toe than be an ignorant , shallow, judgemntal person who likes to stereotype those based purely on looks.
Tell me who is the bad parent ? I will give you a clue it isnt the person with the tattoos.
tattodrebelmomma commented on Oct 18 11 at 6:26 pmI think she is very beautiful. What is wrong with showing young ladys that you can be yourself and not be some outcast. Way to teach people to hate others, you should be proud , because your so perfect, to be able to judge others.
Brendan commented on Oct 18 11 at 7:00 pmSurely tattoos are not nearly as damaging as the body image issues institutionalised by Barbie, as well as almost every film, music video and magazine…
Jenna Jury commented on Oct 18 11 at 7:31 pmI normally dont write on articles like this however the comment written about tattoos and piercings being “ungodly” really annoyed me. I am a CHRISTIAN, I am pentecostal, my husband is a preacher. However I have three peircings in one ear and four in the other and I have a tatto on my ankle. Because I have these I’m going to hell? Seriously this article is a bout a barbie doll, not about God and while I’m totally for witnessing, I believe you should do it in actual context with the bible. Instead of talking about the many rules of the old testament, why not talk about how man looks on the outward appearence but the Lord looks in the heart? However, this is an article about a barbie doll like I said. So, would I buy this for my daughter? I don’t feel either good or bad about it. It’s a doll. if it can teach girls to have better tolerance of others then I say go for it.
this-is stupid commented on Oct 18 11 at 8:28 pmThis is NOT the first barbie with tattoos….ignorant people. what about doodle bears…do they promote tattoos to you? …sigh….
skelly commented on Oct 18 11 at 10:28 pmLove this. My daughter is still young enough that I’m still telling myself I wont be buying any barbies at all (we’ll see if I change my tune in two years or so) but I second the point on any step towards a more diverse representation of womanhood is an awesome advancement for mattel. As a classic child of the 90′s, I decided I was ever so into grunge before I outgrew barbie, and I still have a slew of barbies covered in sharpie tattoos and buzzcuts to show for it. Judging by the fact that my not quite two year old responded to my partner’s new tattoo last month by colouring in the empty spots on mommy’s arms to match daddy’s arms, I’m sure she’ll someday love this too. I just wanted to say, in response to the woman who stated that piercings and tattoos are ungodly, I am one relieved liberal, agnostic, pansexual, living in sin, pierced, tattooed, young mother. My first thought was ‘finally! someone gets their bible thumping right!’. Nothing makes me angrier than a homophobe (or some other ‘phobe’) wagging their finger at an ungodly act while waltzing around covered in tattoos. Either believe that god wants us to love our neighbour, respect all that he created in his image, and question that which we see as unjust, or don’t believe it. But please don’t pick and choose which abominations you see fit to condemn to justify your political and ethical views. So thank you, previous poster, for some equal opportunity bible thumping.
BlackOrchid commented on Oct 18 11 at 10:34 pmthis article totally worked – I bought one!
Linda, t.o.o. commented on Oct 19 11 at 12:55 amI think the pink hair and tattoos are fine. The objectionable things about Barbie are the tiny feet and gigantic fake boobs.
Christina commented on Oct 19 11 at 1:00 amI think all that parents that are freaking out about this barbie should actually look at the rest of the toys that are out there! I would much rather a child to play with this doll then a brats doll or any of the other dolls that literally have nothing to offer but skimpy clothes. Most people now have tattoos and they are not the taboo thing of years ago, I have 3 and I am a fully functioning human being. A tattoo does not define you as a bad person and people need to grow the heck up. There are a few dolls on the market (at least there use to be) that had temp tattoos, its ok 4 that but once the doll is sold with them there is a problem. SERIOUSLY!!! And what about kids having their own temp tattoos? Come on people open your eyes and realize half of you are trying so hard to keep your child safe that one day its going to blow up in your face!
Christina commented on Oct 19 11 at 1:01 amBTW I SOOOO want her! She is gorgeous and being a collector myself I would love to have such a wonderful addition.
Bec commented on Oct 19 11 at 1:59 amMy daughter would love this!
I agree with the comment about pink hair and tattoos being better then unrealistic body shapes, I am not saying little girls should run off and get tattooed but this would help to show little girls that it is ok to look different and that people how are different are not scarey or bad. It would also be good for kids like mine whose parents and friends do have tattoo, piercings and weird hair.
Sick of It commented on Oct 19 11 at 8:12 amWhat ever happened to playing with sticks and rocks? Kids these days are so spoiled and adults these days have no morals.
goddess commented on Oct 19 11 at 10:44 amWhy they used all the stones to kill the whores and all the sticks to burn the witches. Duh. @@
tattoo princess commented on Oct 19 11 at 11:09 amOkay so I don’t do drugs, I’ve never been arrested or gotten a ticket, but after tonight i’m going to have tattoo number six. I also have a tongue piercing and a belly button ring. I don’t have children of my own, but i do have a nephew. He knows about tattoos and piercings, and if he wants them when he is 18, that is perfectly fine with both his mother and me. Tattoos are artwork, with meanings behind them. I’m a business woman at a car dealership, and i cover my tattoos up for my job to be more professional, but they don’t make me a bad person or a bad employee. You people who are against this barbie are so close-minded it is ridiculous.
Teresa commented on Oct 19 11 at 11:41 amI think she is cute. I like Barbie, have no problem with her, played with her when I was little and I like her new pink hair. I played with Barbie when i was around 6 or 7 years old. I was smart enough to know that she wasn’t a role model. She just satisfied my deisre for fashionable, over the top clothes and pink cars. Get over it people, and stop thinking your kids are stupid. If they run out to get tatoos at 7 years old, you are doing something wrong. If they run out and get tatoos at 18, it has nothing to do with Barbie.
Karebear commented on Oct 19 11 at 12:01 pmTo the parents “outraged” by this doll, or thinking that any parent who allows their child to play with this doll shouldnt be a parent, what kind of parent are YOU??? Sticking up your nose at girls who look different and basically sending that message to your child that its ok. I am a proud parent of a gorgeous, smart, 3 year old (and a damn good one) and I happen to HAVE pink hair and tattoos. Im not a troublemaker. I just like to express myself, and I would MUCH rather my daughter play with a doll that sends the same message instead of a “classic” barbie that sends the complete opposite message…. “This is what perfect is. This is what every girl should look like”. The majority of highschool girls strive to be miss perfect and im sure A LOT of it has to do with parenting like yours.
Manjari commented on Oct 19 11 at 2:14 pmLol, Goddess!
Nik commented on Oct 19 11 at 2:40 pmWhy don’t I have tattoos? Would you put a bumper sticker on a Ferrari?
goddess commented on Oct 19 11 at 5:08 pmMisquote Nik. Originally Dave Mustaine is quoted as saying: ” Never, you don’t put a bumper sticker on Mercedes-Benz..”
Nik commented on Oct 19 11 at 7:09 pmGoddess: I was not aware that this was a quotation. It was just something I have heard. Thank you for the insight, though it still holds true.
Mike D. commented on Oct 20 11 at 9:00 amSince when do tattoos equal being sucidal. I don’t even understand why people get so upset about tattoos. Guess what idiots they’re not contagious. If you don’t like them don’t get one. Plain and sipmle. It amazes me how people can be effected by what someone else does to their own body. I have lot’s of tattoos and guess what i have a great job and a loving family. I donate to charities and am a productive part of my community. It’s 2011 people, tattoos are very common these days and don’t automatically equate to being some low life degenerate. Try worrying about yourselves for a change and let other people live their own lives in their own way. Last i checked no ones ever died from gazing upon a person with tattoos.
Grow up!!
Tina commented on Oct 20 11 at 12:44 pmI am really bothered by the comments on here. Talking about giving her a rope for a suicide doll or giving her a beer and cigarette. So what you’re saying is you’re trash if you have tattoos. I have two and am a wonderful mother and I am classy. Just because you have tattoos doesn’t make you a hellraiser. And no it doesn’t make you a non Christian to have tattoos. God also doesn’t like judgemental people. He is the only judge. So all of you prudes need to get off you’re high horse all of you think you’re perfect because you don’t have anything on your skin. What a load of bull. You’re hearts don’t seem to be very big or caring.
Joe commented on Oct 20 11 at 2:41 pmWhy should Barbie be different than other American skanks? Face it people, American women are sluts.
goddess commented on Oct 20 11 at 6:50 pmReally Joe? I’ve only ever had sex with my husband- and we’ve been married over 26 years now, LOL! How many people have YOU had sex with? Troll…..
Mathilda commented on Oct 21 11 at 1:32 amI think the pink hair is Great! The tattoos on Barbie are cute.. very delicate, fine-lined, nicely tinted, respectful of “who Barbie is”.. like having a permanent necklace. I have NO issue with the doll.. just some of the ‘haters’ making comments. Then, too, you’re entitled to your own opinions.
I recently had eye liner tattooed on. Next will be eye brows– since I’m facing chemo, and don’t want to look completely hairless. I also have a flower on my foot, angel wings on my thigh, and am designing/planning another.
My goodness.. certainly there are much bigger, more serious issues in the world to get worked up over than if “Barbie” has a tattoo?!
Holly mother of 2 commented on Oct 21 11 at 6:56 amI LOVE this doll! It will be added to my daughters collection! Ohh and my daughter is 2! Hate on that!
Kristen commented on Oct 21 11 at 7:26 amBarbie doesn’t suck because she has tattoos and pink hair. Barbie sucks because she is Barbie.
Sara commented on Oct 21 11 at 2:10 pmAll i say is this is about time they made something like this!
Chrissy commented on Oct 21 11 at 4:15 pmWhat is the problem people? The whole world has changed, so why not Barbie.? I think she’s awesome and so doesn’t my daughter, we’d love to buy one if that’s possible. Does anyone know how we can get one?
bwsf commented on Oct 21 11 at 7:36 pmI thought for one second it might be a cool Barbie doll, but she just looks like a pink haired Lohan.
Megglasswell commented on Oct 21 11 at 7:36 pmI hope anyone who has made a negative comment here has already whined about the monster high dolls too.
Danielle M. Alger commented on Oct 21 11 at 8:19 pmI’d buy her. She’s cool & very modern. People w/ tatts aren’t all bad. Most just symbolize art & what we believe n. We shouldn’t just criticize anymore. That’s the message I c! =)
Joyce commented on Oct 21 11 at 8:29 pmI happen to adore this doll and anyone who doesn’t is just very closed minded about what really goes on in this world! My daughter is 18 and would love to have this doll, in fact she use to sport the pink hair herself! The only thing I think this doll is missing is a tiny little stud in her nose, that would really make her look cute and be up with the times. :D
Melissa Harris commented on Oct 21 11 at 8:42 pmlol so much bigotry over something as trivial as a doll. XD my mom has tatts and piercings, and she has done an excellent job in raising me and my sisters. we all graduated and went to college. we were taught to never judge a person by appearances alone. we grew up with barbies and you know what we did with them? we cut their hair and died it different colors. we had gay and straight couples. we had them give birth and start a family. we had one doll be a drug addict and get help. we played with them like they were REAL people with REAL issues and lives. i now have a daughter of my own and you know what!? i plan to buy her that doll because it’ll be like playing with a doll version of her grandmother, and i don’t see anything wrong with what she looks like. i see a beautiful doll ho just happens to have tattoos and pink hair.
Amanda Snyder commented on Oct 21 11 at 9:09 pmHmmmmm so I guess having tats makes me a bad mom to my awesome happy healthy two year old baby boy. I dont so the big hairy deal.
Gothgirl commented on Oct 21 11 at 10:59 pmGoddess your comment was right on!!! Now to everyone else…. ITS A DOLL, A TOY, SOMETHING YOU DON’T HAVE TO BUY OR EVEN LOOK AT!! Everyone is entitle to thier religous preferences and ideals but this uproar has overstpped into insanity. Cristians may see this as encouraging harm to God’s temple but other religions would consider it adornment. This is the USA wehave a little thing called freedom of religion. And the fact that this has nothing to do with religion should be pushed to the forefront. It looks more like that average 20 something than any other Barbie has in the past, it shows a little less negative stereotype and it helps foster acceptance of people who may appear different. I am not a collector, my children are almost grown and I usually have negative feeling about Barbies to be honest…but I will probably buy this doll. I have tatoos, my daughter has pink hair and wants to be a tatoo artist, it fits into our CHOSEN lifestyle, I applaud Mattel for being more open minded and acceptting than other people out there. BTW I am a professional, I have been a teacher, grew up a Christian, and I am a productive part of society although I have 15 tattoos.:)
BARBIE FAN!!! commented on Oct 22 11 at 12:39 ami think the new barbie is fantastic!!!!! i see it as ‘if you dont like it dont buy it’. personal opinion is needed in this situation. im sorry to those parents who disagree with me but if you dont like then explain to your child why you think so. either way one thing will happen. you try to convince them now that tatts are bad and they rebel agenst you now or when they are old enough to make on desisions or they will agree and follow you. no one can plan the future and no one can change a persons mind. but tattoos are all a personal desision and a way of expressing your self. like it or bit it is how i see it. there is stuff i dont agree with but i suck it up and deal with it. i back barbie up one hundred precent on this barbie it was a great idea and im sure your kids wont even know about it unless you tell them. thanks.
Carmol76 commented on Oct 22 11 at 8:18 amSome of these people are very insulting. I played with the doctor Barbie, guess what? I am not a doctor. I am a professional, have never tried any drug in my life, and I do have 6 tattoos and my husband has about 30(also works professionally for and international company) I don’t have pink hair but my daughters 9 and 11 want pink highlights. Not cause of a doll, I live in a very nice suburban area with a really good school district and their friends have them. I also have 3 sons. One did get a tattoo in memory of his grandfather when he turned 18. The 19 year old doesn’t want one. The 16 year old wants to be a navy seal so he will choose when he learns what’s acceptable in the navy. The 11 year old girl doesn’t want one at all she has stated in the past while discussing my latest one with her 9 year old sister who does want one.
As long as you are teaching your kids good morals and to be good people, that you don’t just get handed things in life and you need to study and work hard to be successful, they will ALWAYS choose there own styles! I have never won an argument with my 11 year old about what shirt matches what pants but I also have never had to ask her to do homework, or study or do her chores. These parents that think a Barbie is such a threat to their children’s morals, probably dont have the time to put into raising their kids themselves with morals and are looking for the toy companies to do their jobs for them. By the way, we have 5 Harley Davidson barbies too.
Sarah commented on Oct 22 11 at 11:22 amI don’t let my daughters play with barbies because I don’t want them thinking that they need plastic surgery to look normal. They don’t need tattoos either, but that’s not nearly as dangerous for their blossoming self image. And while we’re at it, what’s her beef with a pregnant Barbie? I don’t have any problems with my girls aspiring to be a mom…
Sanriobaby =^.^= commented on Oct 22 11 at 12:25 pmI see no problem with this, if anything, it teaches girls to appreciate the differences in others and still find the beauty in it. Besides, this particular Barbie doll was made for the collectors, who are considerably older than most children who actually play w/dolls in general. This isn’t the first time that Barbie has put out a tattooed doll. People need to stop getting bent out of shape about these things. Barbie is a toy, and most kids will never see or be truly influenced by what the adults want to read into it. As with all things, there should always be a balance, and if you don’t want to get this doll, then don’t buy it for your daughter. Chances are, she’s never gonna see this one anyway.
rumbleco commented on Oct 22 11 at 10:09 pmHmmmm….countless hours spent applying make-up in every color of the spectrum, fattening your lashes or just gluing on serrogates, plucking unwanted hair, applying applique gemstones, painting elaborate designs on nails and hanging all sorts of designs from holes poked through your ears? seems to me that the only difference between this ritual and tattoes are that the gals who are complaining LACK COMMITTMENT !!!
TBerry commented on Oct 24 11 at 10:32 amSince kids are going to see more and more tattoos out there anyway I don’t see the issue. When I was a kid the only people who had tattoos were military vets or bikers, now everyone from a CEO to the cashier at my grocery store have them. Some are more noticeable than others but kids are going to be exposed. This doesn’t teach that tattoos are cool, just not abnormal.
WorkingRoundTheClock commented on Oct 25 11 at 12:41 am@ Kris– really? You just can’t choose to not buy the Barbie without saying tattoos and piercings are against the Bible? If you want to go there, may I add that your polyester blend shirt, spandex-enhanced jeans and styled hair are also “not Biblical”? If you followed the Bible as closely as you seem to be claiming, then you need to get yourself to the back of the room and wait to speak till the men let you.
The Barbie is cute and I would likely buy it once I get settled in my new house. She reminds me of a good friend who dyes her hair every color of the rainbow, has more ink than the New York Times and is raising three incredibly smart, beautiful and talented children (one who is already in college programs although a sophomore in HS). I guess you think she must be trashy, too.
Falin commented on Oct 25 11 at 10:40 amI LOVE LOVE LOVE HER…WHERE CAN I GET ONE FOR MYSELF AND MY 2 GIRLS?!?…THEY WOULD LOVE THEM!..MY 2YEAR OLD IS ALWAYS ADORNED WITH THE TEMP TATTOOS AND THAT DOESNT MAKE HER OR MYSELF ANY LESS OF A PERSON!…SO GET OVER IT…ITS REALLY NOT THAT SERIOUS!
Alessa commented on Nov 15 11 at 6:23 pmI don’t mind that the doll has pink hair and tattoos..my problem lies in the fact that we have yet another doll that resembles a porn star or high priced hooker. Miniskirt, high heels, pouty lips, lots of makeup, heavy-lidded bedroom eyes, that seductive look on the face.. you get the idea. Why does every barbie or similar doll have to look so slutty?
Madi commented on Nov 15 11 at 7:06 pmAre you kidding me?! I’m covered in tattoos from head to toe. I have 12 peircings in “unconventional” places, and my hair has been every color I could get my hands on since I was 16 years old. I’m a preschool teacher with a degree and a published book on the subject. I love my job and promote non-bias thinking and creativity. All of the other amazing people I work with have tattoos or peircings or colorful hair. Our parents love it, and they love the message it gives their children and many of our parents who are doctors and laywers and other respectable members of socity also have tatoos. I dont exactly believe in Barbie’s unnatural porportions but the fact that someone can’t accept the way some one else looks is also unnatural and sad. Look beyond your tiny mind, do you think your “god” would approve of your thinking lesser of fellow man, how do you feel about the homeless or people who are mentally ill? Are they also menace upon our planet?
NotDonnaReed commented on Nov 16 11 at 12:06 amBarbie shouldnt be a role model to our daughters anymore. It tells them that they have to be skinny and beautiful and perfect all the time and that is what is expected. They are a toy. At least this barbie with her pink hair and tattoos isnt hiding anything. She is trying to be real. I have tattoos, i dye my hair odd colors off and on, it doesnt make me a bad role model. How we look doesnt make us a role model. How we act and our views and opinions is what should make us a role model. Real true beauty is on the inside. I love this doll. Thanks for making one that shows how diverse humanity is!!
Steph commented on Nov 16 11 at 12:10 amI’m a Mom and I have tattoos! I think this Barbie reflects the current fashion trends, just as Barbie has ALWAYS done. The only thing I find odd about this doll is the cactus… From the photo, it appears that she has a dog dressed as a cactus… I’ve never personally seen a dog dressed as a cactus, but to each his own! lol
Kenzie commented on Nov 16 11 at 12:23 amYou know what I find offensive and disconcerting? The fact that this person is calling TATTOOS and originality offensive… It actually angers me! I am not a mommy yet, but I have worked with young children and adored all of them for the last ten years and guess what! I have a lot of tattoos! Guess I better reconsider raising a family, what with my maple leaf branch covering my arm. It might offend somebody. Should I start only wearing preppy button-down blouses and khakis while I’m at it? This isn’t an age where only sailors and prisoners don tattoos, people. Wake up, and stop judging! There should be civil rights activists lecturing you!
kajiva commented on Nov 16 11 at 4:57 pmAm I the only one who thinks that looks like Quinn Fabray from the beginning of season 3 of Glee? Because if kids think that too, then there’s a problem, since she drank and smoked when she looked like that.
Sarah commented on Nov 20 11 at 12:30 amOk for all the people saying this is a horrible barbie, let’s think for a second. The whole concept of who Barbie is, is kind of messed up. She has unrealistic body type, huge chest and tiny waist. So what does that tell our girls? She can’t keep a job. Everytime you look Barbie has a new career. I think this Barbie is as close as we are going to get to a normal doll. I absolutely love this Barbie! If she wasn’t so expensive I would buy one. Also I have multiple tattoos, have dyed my hair since I was 19, am a Pagan and have a beautiful healthy and very bright 4 month old. I plan to get another tattoo for her. And the people on here that say dyed hair and tats are “ungodly”, you being judgemental is “ungodly”. My grandmother has gone to church every sunday since she was a child and she has a tattoo on her ankle to cover a surgery scar. Now if you want to tell me she’s not going to heaven because of that well then you aren’t either.
seriously commented on Nov 20 11 at 3:19 amI am still in awe at the bizarre idea that dolls are role models. Children are not stupid and it is insulting that adults think they are. I never once thought my body should look like barbie any more than I thought my body should look like a cabbage patch doll, or my little pony. Seriously, do you think little pioneer girls that played with corn-husk dolls thought they should have bodies like corn-husks?
When children play with dolls it helps them process what they are learning from their family and society and it is reflected in the story-line and activities that they have their doll perform. It doesn’t really matter what the doll looks like. Pay attention when your child is playing with dolls of any kind because they will tell you exactly what they have learned or experienced from their ACTUAL role models.
Self-esteem and a healthy body image do not come from dolls, it comes from positive surroundings and an environment that fosters acceptance. Anyone that thinks they can blame a doll for societies problems is truly blinded by ignorance.
Amanda commented on Nov 20 11 at 4:53 pmI personally think this Barbie is beautiful. And would love to get one for both of my nieces. As a tattooed mother myself, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with this Barbie. I have a six year old son that is already interested in tattoos. Though he knows that he’s not allowed to have any until he’s an adult.
Amanda commented on Nov 28 11 at 9:57 pmi dont see anything wrong with a tattooed barbie
Casi commented on Nov 28 11 at 11:52 pmI don’t see a problem with it. It is dumb that people are just now having a problem with Barbie. I mean, look at the clothes she wears…they are all mostly very tight and showing a lot of her goods….but OH NO! She has tattoos and now everyone is making a big deal. Seriously get over it. I am a mother of a 11mth daughter and I am about to get some tattoos. There is no problem with them. It is art, just like a painting on a wall in your home only on your body.
adalisa commented on Dec 02 11 at 4:55 pmI think everyone who is criticizing this doll is in some way ignorant. Be realistic barbies are intended for the younger audience once your child is of age to be able to get a tattoo there barbie playing days are well over. Allowing your child to watch television where these celebrities discuss sex, drugs, dress like clowns if dressed at all,and advertise their bodies full of tattooes is just as bad as purchasing this amazing tattooed barbie. Open your eyes to the amount of diversity around you and remeber its your job as a parent to raise your child with a good head on their shoulders.
shauna commented on Dec 05 11 at 10:47 amI as a mother of a 5 year old, wouldn’t particularly get this doll for my daughter at the age she is. If she was older, I would. I think the doll is beautiful and I would of loved to of had one, when I was younger. I do not see a problem. As long as it is age related. I think its totally fine. People get into too much of an uproar now a days.
Ashley Marie commented on Dec 05 11 at 10:50 amThis barbie is AWESOME, I would totally buy this for my daughter, IMO who says barbie HAS to be little miss perfect perky blonde babe? Why cant they have tattoos? or peircings? I think adults throwing fits about it should go back to the 50′s where their more comfortable…
TIFFANY commented on Dec 05 11 at 10:51 amI LOVE THIS DOLL my girls saw this and instantly fell in love… If your using a doll, yet alone a Barbie doll as a role model for your girls in the first place theres something wrong…. I personally have a tattoo and i’m not a bad person… its about time someone gave her this look… this is the Barbie I wanted as a Child!!! Shes Awesome!!!!
Amber commented on Dec 05 11 at 11:20 amI say that someone that teaches their kids about tattoos dont deserve kids…. IS IGNORANT on the highest level. I have 8 tattoos and probably way more class and respect for myself than the person writing this. I will gladly find a gun to hand you along with a rope if you promise to put it to use. I am tired of people pushing their perfect ways on everyone else…. I dont go around telling people… “go get a tattoo, its the only right thing to do. You will go to hell if you dont…. go get a tattoo.” Its art get over it!!! self expression is running out in the world today, we need things like this. Suck it up cupcake!!!
Amber commented on Dec 05 11 at 11:38 amTo say* that someone that teaches their children about tattoos…. not I say
caitie commented on Dec 05 11 at 11:51 amI think if your having issues with a doll you DONT HAVE TO BUY. Then you have a lot more concerning issues in yourself to worry about.
killerxblonde commented on Dec 12 11 at 2:54 pmits called diversity…i love it.i want one for myself.
A babbler. commented on Dec 29 11 at 7:34 pmHey first of all why you complaining about this! Aint your barbie ! They can make barbies however they want cause THEY INVENTED THEM. So stop talking about all this bullsh!t and grow the fuuck up.
Bridget commented on Jan 14 12 at 5:41 pmGet over it. You dont HAVE to buy it for your kids and there are real girls that actually look like that anyways its actually kind of a good thing they made this doll so little girls can know its ok to look different if u want to cause most barbies look the same and thats an unrealistic view on women. If you ask me they should make even more diverse barbies than they do now. They should make chubby ones and short ones and differently proportioned ones. Barbie is an all time favorite no doubt about that but its sending the message that all women are supposed to look perfect with long hair tiny waists super model legs and large breasts so if theyre going to send that message why not show them the different looking girls there really are in this world
mamakat commented on Jan 14 12 at 8:22 pmSome of the nicest people I know have tatts!! Since mama has purple hair & tattoos, & daddy not only has them, but is a tattoo artist, our daughters would love this =)
jessica commented on Feb 14 12 at 9:24 pmPeople need to get a life. They say the Barbie is a collectable. Geared for adults not children and if u think that Barbie is going to inspire girls to get tats, then what about the fake tats kids put on them selves all the time. And the dying of pink Barbie hair I dye my hair many colors one time a year and so do all 3 of my kids. Does that make us criminals or future criminals. My kids all wear fake tats are the bad for that too. Grow up people.
Hal Doll commented on Feb 15 12 at 8:00 amIf there were more dolls that showed actual diversity, maybe kids would not be so drawn to the ones that show unrealistic notions of how women are supposed to look and act.
To anyone who thinks tattooed Barbie is bad…you’re gonna really hate this:

Holly commented on Mar 19 12 at 2:47 pmTo those freaking out about tattoos and piercings on Barbie doesn’t anyone remember piercing Barbie ? She came in a VERY skimpy outfit(short blue one shoulder top and jean mini skirt) complete with “Piercing Gun” and multiple ear holes with which you could pretend to pierce her ears. I had that as a child and now that there’s a tattoo barbie who is CLOTHED people are freaking out? What is wrong with society. Just because I pierced my barbie as a child did not make me want all sorts of piercings when I was younger. I just thought it was fun. When I was younger I just wanted to be like my mom and dad who should be the REAL role models today.
mssilly commented on Mar 24 12 at 12:29 amlol.. i fell head to toes when i first saw this barbie. it’s super awesome. and i don’t think that every kids that see barbie will be like barbie. maybe some, if they don’t get good influenced from their surrounding. i grew up and once played barbie, i just enjoyed to make her prettier and it didn’t affect how i dress. i’m chubby for my mom, fyi, so yeah, that’s a big no no. i prefer my mom treated me better over concerning a doll that probably will be forgotten after you know the world more, or probably boys.. lol..
Ginny Lyn commented on Apr 08 12 at 12:54 amI think a tattoo’d Barbie is long over due! Tattoos are becoming more mainstream and since the reality shows Miami/L.A./New York Ink Id venture to say they are now popular culture! I design tattoos & have had the pleasure of working with all types of people. The industry isnt marked by prisoners, sailors & far off foreign tribes anymore. The biggest difference between someone who has tattoos & someone who doesnt? Tattoo’d people dont judge you for not having tattoos. So next time you want to look down your nose at us, why dont you ask us what our tattoos mean, as long as you’re staring… God forbid, you might learn something amazing!
Adriana Phillips commented on May 09 12 at 12:52 pmGiggles *** Before I read this I thought it was P!nk, so it’s not but the doll is so cool I would bye this for my girls, nothing wrong with it.
Jenna commented on May 14 12 at 1:07 pmI hardly think that tons of teen/adult girls are going to start getting tattoos because a barbie doll that they played with when they were 6 had them. Tattoos take a little more thought than that, don’t you think? How any girls do you see walking around looking like the barbie dolls they used to play with?
And it’s completely wrong for people to compare this to a suicide barbie with a rope and gun, or a barbie with a cigarette and a beer. I have tattoos and I’ve never smoked, I hate beer (I seldom drink any alcohol at all), I’ve never tried to kill myself, and I’ve never been in trouble with the law. I’m in college hoping to work in the marine biology field. I think that showing girls that you can still be beautiful even if you have a lot of tattoos is a lot better than showing them you have to be beautiful by looking like an unrealistically proportioned BIMBO.
Kerry commented on May 15 12 at 8:03 pmSo she has tattoos. Big deal. People equating tattoos with suicide and alcohol and drugs……really guys?? There is nothing wrong with tattoos. I have some and they all symbolise very important things for me. It is a means to creatively commemorate special things in my life. So why do people have an issue with this? It is inclusive and so much better than the bimbo image of earlier barbies. Mattel…….good job!
