Sad, Sad, Sad: Faced with Arrest or Deportation, Some Illegal Immigrants are Signing Over Their Kids to Others
Can you imagine ever having a reason to give up your child? I can’t. Nothing and no one could ever make me part ways with my babies.
Now imagine really, really wanting your child to have a good, safe life filled with opportunity in the United States but fearing it might not be possible because of strict immigration laws like those recently enacted in Alabama.
There are parents in Alabama who are illegal immigrants and as a result staring at the very real possibility of deportation. And some of those parents are making the choice to potentially sign their kids over to friends, relatives and co-workers if they get arrested or deported, according to the Associated Press.
If that doesn’t break your heart, you must not have one.
To make the situation even more sad, state Sen. Scott Beason, one of the key sponsors of the measure that is frightening illegal immigrants, is saying such stories are simply fabricated to “pull on heart strings” and is publicly doubting if there are really that many people who are considering giving up their kids.
The law in Alabama was passed earlier this year and allows police to hold suspected illegal immigrants without bond if they can’t prove citizenship. Opponents of the measure fear it could lead to widespread discrimination. It is in effect until at least Nov. 29th, at which time an appeals court will hear oral arguments from both sides.
As a result of the law, some illegal immigrants are saying if they don’t make plans for their U.S.-born kids in the event of being arrested or deported, they fear the kids will be left home alone or sent to foster care. Many of those living in fear are from Mexico, where they are deathly afraid of returning because of the drug cartels.
I’m aware there are plenty of anti-immigration folks out there who relish the idea of illegal immigrants being deported. But I just can’t imagine who would celebrate this new law knowing it will mean the separation of so many parents from their children — people who came here in search of a better life for their offspring. After all, isn’t a better life something we all want for our children?
Even more heartbreaking (if that’s possible)? The kids who are old enough to know that they could be separated from their parents, and there’s nothing they can do about it. Would you wish that on any child, no matter his or her immigration status? Where is the compassion?

Andrea commented on Oct 09 11 at 7:20 pmAmen, Kate. I feel exactly the same way.
hogface commented on Oct 09 11 at 7:31 pmthey should have thought about that before they came here, illegal is illegal
Little Frogs commented on Oct 09 11 at 7:46 pmTHeir kids can go home to their native country. THey leave the kids here because when they turn 18, they can try to get their parents in.
We need to stop this. Immigration is important to America but illegal immigration is bad for our country.
lam commented on Oct 09 11 at 8:27 pmAmerican citizens are American citizens, no matter why their parents came here. Those kids have every right to stay if they’re born here, and every right to pursue citizenship for their parents, as generations of immigrants have done before them. The only difference is that these immigrants aren’t white. We DO need to stop it, the bullsh*t legislation, the witch hunts, the forcing them into a corner. We must acknowledge the vital role that cheap labor has played in our nation since the slaves were sold on the block. Illegal immigration will continue until our economy ceases to demand cheap and unregulated labor. Americans can’t continue to live overextended, credit driven, consumer lifestyles while also abusing the laborers that make that possible.
Delaware Bob commented on Oct 09 11 at 8:53 pmWhat kind of a parent would leave their children behind? I guess they don’t love their children or they have no use for them as the anchor is not holding them here in America. When the raids were in force, they were there screaming, “You are separating families!” I ask you, if they leave their child behind, who is separating a family? This is just another problem with illegal immigration. Did you ever hear of this happening with LEGAL immigration?
Whe we get rid of all the illegal aliens, we will get rid of all the problems that go with them. THAT IS A FACT!
indianastate commented on Oct 09 11 at 11:11 pmIllegals and their children have put a financial strain on our country. Our healthcare, education, entitlments, etc, are on the brink of collapse and the Illegals have contributed to this. Fear of drug cartels you say. How about the drugs carted into this country from Mexico, to be served up on a buffet for our own children? Just last week in the rural farm county I live in, they arrested 5 Illegals (one woman with a toddler) and netted 1.84 million in drugs and cash. This investigation has been going on for 2 years! And the biggest bust in our county’s history. We have had a significant rise in drug use in our area. We also fear the drug cartels. Only they are in our back yard!
Meagan commented on Oct 10 11 at 1:09 am@Little Frogs They werein born here, so this is their native country. Sorry, are you Cherokee? Honestly…
Bunnytwenty commented on Oct 10 11 at 7:54 amOh hi, racists! Your ancestors were immigrants. This nation is built of, and by, immigrants. You just don’t want these people here because they’re not white. Personally, I’d rather have them here – and have you leave.
yahoudi commented on Oct 10 11 at 8:32 amWe shouldn’t be giving citizenship to kids whose mother squatted on US soil. Either a parent is a citizen and thusly the child is, or no one is a citizen. Seriously look at other countries’ policies.
In that vein, they should all go back.
And Bunny- I’ll stay here and continue to pay those taxes that give their kids health care that I can’t always afford with a 10K deductible. And I’ll continue to exercise my free speech to have all illegal aliens deported.
Jan Kowal commented on Oct 10 11 at 9:53 amAs awful as the economy is, and as a worker in a children’s hospital, I can say over the years the number of kids of illegal and LEGAL immigrants is skyrocketing. 99% of these people do not have skills that would give them a family supporting job. So therefore they are dependent on the welfare state for all their needs. It is not only the Mexicans, but the Hmong,Africans, Asian and Arab countries. My hospital has a staff of 10 Spanish interpreters and is required to obtain interpreters for any non English speaking family. Some of the immigrants from China and Africa speak such rare dialects, the hospital subscribes to a foreign phone language service that has an extensive # of even rare languages. The conversation is then carried out by a 3 way conversation. The current “system” caters so fully to these people that most parents very rarely feel the need to learn English even after being in the US for years. My mom came to the US from France after WW2 not knowing a word of English and after 1 yr was fluent in English cuz the govt. mandated English classes. The cost of this on top of all welfare/health benefits is staggering. Learning English should be mandated as a tool for assimilation. It appears nothing will stop this unless there is a legal process for them to reach legal status.
Gilbert White commented on Oct 10 11 at 5:10 pmI ask the pro illigal immigration people this. Do you not understand the great harm illigal immigration is doing to America? Do you realize that today there are US Citizens who are being deprived of services because those services are being given to non citizens? Much harm has come from this desrespect of our laws. To all you clergy who support this violation of our laws. Reach in your pocket please and write a check to pay the US Citizen for the harm that has been done. Thank god for Alabama’s wize and strong leaders who are standing up for Alabama citizens. My heart is with the illigal community and I wish you well, it is sad. Your family loves you in Mexico. $150 in gas will get you home.
Christiangirl commented on Oct 10 11 at 5:42 pmI feel so sorry for all of the hateful people that comment on these kind of blogs and articles. Its incredible to see how broken the world truly is, but it makes more sense to know how little of the world’s population have a place in the Lord’s kingdom. No American is being deprived of any kind of services, as those in states such as Alabama and Georgia can see no black or white American is willing to take on the jobs of these immigrant laborers. Even the unemployed seem to be doing just fine job-searching on their couches and living off of unemployment. The financial strain of our country cannot even come close to being solely blamed on the illegal immigrants and any educated human being whom is not ignorant to the facts would know that. If any one is undeserving of any kind of assistants it is you and your family. To put it in a more blunt and realistic manner…you suck, you are unhappy, full of hate, ignorant, merciless and undeserving. You should be embarrassed that a 19 year old sophomore in college such as myself is more mature and wise than you will ever be. In the mean time keep pretending you are satisfied with your life and fill that emptiness with the oppression of others with the sad excuse that you are “enforcing the laws of your country.” Or go and wrongfully take land that is not yours again? “For judgment will be merciless to one who has shown no mercy;” Good luck! You will all be in my prayers, and for those of you who aren’t religious, or against it…I pray that you will reconsider your values and strive to figure out what is truly important in life. Maybe that will get you somewhere?
Little Frogs commented on Oct 10 11 at 6:45 pmThe argument that our ancestors were immigrants and thus have no right to control immigration at all is foolish.
First of all, the people we call Native Americans weren’t planted here by God. They immigrated themselves. Some before others. Native American groups committed genocide against other Native American groups. Tribes and nations thrived and were slaughtered.
Secondly, do you honestly believe that Asian, African, Central and Southern American nations do not feel that their borders should be inviolate? That it is okay if their laws are obeyed within? That strangers who are there without permission shouldn’t be either jailed or kicked out? That their sovereignty isn’t real? Why do you expect less of us?
Third, isn’t unwanted immigration of a group of people to the homeland of another colonialism? Aren’t you all against colonialism? Isn’t there a post about how Columbus day is bad? You can’t be against colonialism and support illegal immigration.
Dave Francis commented on Oct 10 11 at 7:11 pmWhen America is trying to overcome the 14 Trillion dollar federal deficit, we cannot afford to keep subsidizing the rest of the world’s poor. In fact the daily quota of illegal aliens who slip past our fence, just adds to the poverty already spreading here. Much of that poverty is brought into our nation, by these very individual, that ICE and the Border Patrol try to keep out.
YOU ARE THE VOTERS AND YOU CAN STOP THE MERCILESS INTIMIDATION OF ARIZONA, ALABAMA, GEORGIA AND OTHER STATES THAT UNITE?
The agenda of the U.S. Government have cultivated this mess over thirty years, but the major dilemma came after the 1986 Immigration Control and reform Act. Now that Governor Brown has signed into law the state-only ’Dream Act’ he has assured illegal immigrants will get–public money. Whether they get tuition money from Taxpayers, they are still illegal aliens and under the new Lamar Smith’s E-Very bill, their illegal parents will have to self deported, once they find jobs are no longer available to them. This is because “LEGAL WORKFORCE ACT” (H.R. 2885) after passage, will be a mandatory deterrent, to rid foreigners taking jobs from Americans workers. Corporations, businesses–large or small, will be held accountable, specifically under the growing nationwide influence of the TEA PARTY.
Company owners who still feel they have free reign and not subject to the law, will find themselves on the wrong end of sudden ICE audits, Hiring foreigners will be risking activity and their their company license could be canceled, then alternatively facing huge fines, confiscation of assets and even imprisonment. This is by far a very serious issue, because no matter which way you look at it, this is about obnoxious greed; profiting from the unfortunate 14 million U.S. Citizen and legal worker, who are being extricated in lieu of cheap labor. Even now Business that have illegal nationals in their employ, best be on their guard as the word in out to inform the ICE agencies, of suspicious incidents of employment irregularities. Here is the phone number to report unusual goings-on 1-866-DHS-2ICE (866-347-2423). SEE SOMETHING? DO SOMETHING?
Obama’s main players like Eric Holder and the Dept of IN-Justice are resolute in secret situations as selectivity in deportations. Just because an illegal alien has no heinous criminal record, you could actually walk free? This is not how our immigration laws are written? You enter America in violation of the law, you should be deported. There are very few mitigating circumstances. This is particularly wrong when thousands of legitimate new immigrants must wait their turn, waiting patiently for years. His executive decisions just draw thousands of more foreigners, into our nation looking for free handouts. The–Instant–citizenship for babies, under the present 14th amendment is a twisted, expensive situation that is just part of the $113 billion a year paid out in welfare entitlements. Adding California’s ‘Dream Act” further is yet another windfall for the 20 million plus foreigners, who have settled here in the US. This is unacceptable to the ordinary American people, who seem to being placed secondary to these foreign nationals.
The TEA PARTY is not defined by the GOP RINO’s that are the prominent politic of the party proper. The TEA PARTY is of a different breed that believes in a moderate government, with less intervention in our daily lives. The TEA PARTY is an overhaul of our political system, rampant with corruption and greed, that will overturn the tax code, that—only—47 percent of America pays, with far too many exceptions, loopholes and subsidies. Businessman Herman Cain’s plan of a 9-9-9 tax seems perfectly feasible where everybody pays. By now everybody has heard of Farmers complaints that their crops are dying in the fields, especial the tomato growers in Alabama? What hasn’t been passed on to the general public as admitted in farmers interviews with the Huntsville Times, that they couldn’t locate anybody to hire that was legally here. They the truth came out in the interviews, which they hadn’t even looked for workers at the employment office or advertised in the local press.
One farmer was offered free advertising by a community radio station, but that individual refused. According to the source some farmers were only paying illegal aliens $2.00 a box, but sold their tomatoes for $10.00 a box. My guess it’s probably this same greedy profit margin across the United states? Something is definitely wrong with this picture. Adding insult to injury the farmers were clearing over $200.000 in profit. Then incredulously the farmers and the big agricultural concerns give no benefits to their workers, so not only do the taxpayers have to pay for hospital visits, from the flue to a serious injury; for the whole family as well. Then the children have free education, thanks to the gullible American taxpayer. I am sure illegal aliens and taxpayers are exploited in any other state, in California for sure. The coastal state has one of the massive growing systems throughout this nation, and greedy farmers pay little for the work, placing the whole weight of their illegal aliens living here on the taxpayers. Internal ICE agents do not have the manpower to raid every despicable farm owners acreage, but this nefarious situation is sure to be prevalent everywhere.
If you haven’t really noticed where ICE agents have raided businesses annually–from meat packing plants, carpet warehouses, restaurant chains, supermarkets, hotels, construction sites, companies have quickly advertised from new workers as the illegal aliens not apprehended, have fled. Within a few days there are new lines of potential lawful labor of black, white, Hispanic gender waiting for the chance of a job. A chicken processing plant in Albertville, Alabama hired 125 LEGAL employees this week, to replace the 125 illegal aliens that left their jobs and fled the state—this just informs you that ICE enforcement is working. Contact your own local Senator or Representative or federal politician at 202-224-3121 and insist on E-Verify, “LEGAL WORKFORCE ACT” (H.R. 2885.) HELP THE WORKING AMERICAN AND STOP THESE TRAVESTIES OF OUR LAWS.

Manjari commented on Oct 10 11 at 7:15 pmWhat bunnytwenty said! I’d rather keep undocumented immigrants here and kick out racist, heartless assholes.
lam commented on Oct 10 11 at 7:54 pmNo one is saying that we should not control our borders or control immigration. I think what most of us are saying is that we need to provide an accessible and reasonable path to legal status for people already here. Laws do not need to be obeyed simply because they exist. They are constantly under review by the American people, our judgment demonstrated by our actions and choices. Other nations are other nations. We’re not concerned with matching our laws with theirs, and that is weak argument. People in the US without permission are not strangers. They are people with jobs, lives, families, principles, ideals, and hopes like everyone else. They are not strangers to their neighbors and communities. They are strangers to YOU. And that makes all the difference, doesn’t it?
Little Frogs commented on Oct 10 11 at 8:05 pmWhy should we provide a path for people who jumped in line? Go home and do it the right way. Simply sneaking across the boarder or overstaying your visa does not justify giving you something that others are also trying for.
It’s not about being strangers and that’s a stupid argument on your part. I don’t care if I know you or not. It’s not about race. It’s actually about jobs, about wages. It’s about the vast number of illegal immigrants driving without licenses, without insurance. It’s about the vast number of illegal immigrants who get free medical care while our citizens with no insurance are shackled with a lifetime of debt to pay for medical care. It’s about the way illegal immigration drives down wages; Americans WOULD do those jobs if those jobs paid what they should.
Most Americans are actually opposed to illegal immigration yet when laws are put in place to reflect that, those laws and the people who support them are villified. But that is the judgement of the majority of America. We can’t afford to allow this to continue especially since unemployment is about 10% and real unemployment must be closer to 15 or 20%. We have provided amnesty after amnesty and that has only increased illegal immigration. End it. Now.
Christiangirl commented on Oct 10 11 at 8:10 pmNo Americans would NOT do those jobs, regardless of pay. And how can more than the profit made for “those jobs” be paid? That would take our economy no where. Good try
Christiangirl commented on Oct 10 11 at 8:12 pmAnd in reference to Little Frogs, who are you to say that the native americans were not planted here by God? Jesus is that you? haha
Delaware Bob commented on Oct 10 11 at 8:38 pmI like to make one more comment. First, what parent would leave their children behind? What kind of people are these? Second, these U.S. born children to the illegal aliens are NOT citizens of the United States. They are illegal aliens, also. Can we finally see all the problems with this illegal immigration? Show me one, just one, immigrant who entered this country LEGALLY that has to separate from their children. Just show me one. In the headline you used “illegal immigrants”. Doesn’t this say it all?
Maybe this should be read. This handing out birth certificates to illegal aliens like candy has to stop!

Little Frogs commented on Oct 11 11 at 10:35 amChristiangirl,
We know Native American populations came from Asia.
Linda, t.o.o. commented on Oct 11 11 at 12:52 pm“Why should we provide a path for people who jumped in line?” Do you understand that if we removed every illegal immigrant tomorrow, our entire economy would shut down? Americans are most markedly *not* willing to do these jobs, as has been demonstrated for years. It seems really naive to argue otherwise.
Linda, t.o.o. commented on Oct 11 11 at 12:55 pm“You will all be in my prayers, and for those of you who aren’t religious, or against it…I pray that you will reconsider your values and strive to figure out what is truly important in life. Maybe that will get you somewhere?” Oh, shut up. Is there any place that gets to be free from your proselytizing?
Bunnytwenty commented on Oct 11 11 at 1:13 pm“And I’ll continue to exercise my free speech to have all illegal aliens deported.”
Good! And I’ll continue to call you a racist, because you are.
Also: the people who claim that illegals are hurting American citizens should be pointing their fingers at the banks and the wealthy people hoarding money that could easily buy us adequate health care and education, with a vanishingly small tax increase. Why aren’t anti-immigrant people doing that? everyone repeat with me: BECAUSE YOU’RE RACISTS.
Isn’t free speech fun? I think i’ll keep it up.
Linda, t.o.o. commented on Oct 11 11 at 2:07 pm“Good! And I’ll continue to call you a racist, because you are.” I think that’s been established on a number of threads at this point,
Little Frogs commented on Oct 11 11 at 5:39 pmBunnytwenty,
What makes you think that I’m not blaming the banks and the wealthy people for what they have done to the economy?
What makes you think that I’m against illegal immigration AND for low taxes for the rich?
What makes you think that I’m against illegal immigration AND against national healthcare?Funny how narrow minded you are. You simply assume that anyone who disagrees with you is a racist and stupid to boot. You attempt to shut down any conversation by calling someone racist the second their opinion varies from your script.
Linda, t.o.o. commented on Oct 11 11 at 7:53 pmMaybe if you stop syaing racist things on multiple threads, she’ll stop calling you a racist. Just a thought.
Manjari commented on Oct 11 11 at 11:32 pmLittle Frogs, you are so clearly racist (based on comments from this and other posts) that whatever you say is going to be tainted with racism.
Bunnytwenty commented on Oct 12 11 at 9:34 amYup, LF. Actually, what you said makes it even more convincing – if you’re aware of systematic inequality and the role of the rich, then you’re aware that illegals put far more money into the system than they take out of it, and that the amount of money that the wealthy hoard instead of paying their fair share in taxes vastly dwarfs any possible financial impact illegals might make. So the absolute only reason you could possibly have a problem with illegals is racism. But thanks for playing!
Little Frogs commented on Oct 12 11 at 11:15 amBunnyTwenty,
I do not believe that illegals put far more money into the system then they take out of it.
1. They take their wages out of country. That’s a loss.
2. They cost Americans jobs. That’s a loss.
3. They lower wages for Americans. That’s a loss.
4. They use resources meant for Americans. That’s a loss.YOUR silly argument that since the rich hoard their money instead of paying their fair share of taxes is so much more than illegal immigrants and therefore anyone who is concerned about illegal immigration must be a racist is ludicrous. It’s like saying the police shouldn’t bother with investigating theft or rape because there are murders.
It is possible to be concerned about both. THIS blog post was about illegal immigration, not corporations.
Linda, t.o.o. commented on Oct 12 11 at 11:53 am“I do not believe that illegals put far more money into the system then they take out of it.” Right. Let’s see the documentation for that one too. :/
Little Frogs commented on Oct 12 11 at 12:12 pmAnd seriously, have any of you really thought this through?
The argument is that our economy is dependent upon illegal immigration and that we should allow them to stay or become citizens? That they do jobs Americans won’t do?
So let’s say we let them stay, they have kids. WIll their kids be expected to fulfill the jobs of their parents? Or will they be too American to do those jobs? In the first case, we are created a permanent near slave class of underpaid workers with illegal working conditions and no real OSHA oversight. In the second, who will do those jobs? more illegal immigrants continuing the cycle? And what will their children do? We know that children from homes in poverty tend to stay in poverty, that it is difficult to leave poverty, that getting an education is hard. So if they are too American to do these jobs but not educated enough to move out of poverty, what will they do?
Your policy supports a near permanent importing of workers with no protections and craptastic wages. It will cause our struggling lower class to explode and further burden our safety nets.
Bunnytwenty commented on Oct 12 11 at 1:53 pmIt took me 30 seconds to find this article, LF:
http://www.care2.com/causes/undocumented-immigrants-pay-more-in-taxes-than-wealthy.html
“A new study released by the Immigration Policy Center for tax day shows that at least half of the undocumented immigrants in this country pay income taxes. Add that to the sales and property taxes that those undocumented persons also pay and undocumented immigrants pay more in taxes than most wealthy Americans.”
Oh look, here’s more:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economic_impact_of_illegal_immigrants_in_the_United_States#Weighing_Benefits_against_Costs
“Professor of Law Francine Lipman [33] writes that the belief that illegal migrants are exploiting the US economy and that they cost more in services than they contribute to the economy is “undeniably false”. Lipman asserts that “undocumented immigrants actually contribute more to public coffers in taxes than they cost in social services” and “contribute to the U.S. economy through their investments and consumption of goods and services; filling of millions of essential worker positions resulting in subsidiary job creation, increased productivity and lower costs of goods and services; and unrequited contributions to Social Security, Medicare and unemployment insurance programs.”[34]”In other words: you = racist!!!!
Little frogs commented on Oct 12 11 at 3:14 pmWikipedia? And Care2? Seriously, those are your sources that prove I’m a racist?
From the Congressional Budget Office (http://www.cbo.gov/ftpdocs/87xx/doc8711/12-6-Immigration.pdf)
1. State and local governments incur costs for providing services to unauthorized immigrants and have lim- ited options for avoiding or minimizing those costs.2. The amount that state and local governments spend on services for unauthorized immigrants represents a small percentage of the total amount spent by those governments to provide such services to residents in their jurisdictions.
3. The tax revenues that unauthorized immigrants gen- erate for state and local governments do not offset the total cost of services provided to those immigrants.
4. Federal aid programs offer resources to state and local governments that provide services to unauthorized immigrants, but those funds do not fully cover the costs incurred by those governments.
5. The SSA assumes that about half of unauthorized immigrants pay Social Security taxes.
6. Thus, children who are unauthorized immigrants represent almost 4 percent of the overall school-age population. Their numbers are growing quickly in some states, adding additional budgetary pressures.
7.According to a report commissioned by the United States/Mexico Border Counties Coalition, in 2000, county governments that share a border with Mexico incurred almost $190 million in costs for providing uncompensated care to unauthorized immigrants; that figure represented about one-quarter of all uncompen sated health costs incurred by those governments in that year.
Christiangirl commented on Oct 14 11 at 11:32 amLittle Frogs, grab your bible and get to work! What does Natives coming from Asia have to to with Gods will? Ignorant sad people, all of you. Get a more time consuming occupation instead of expressing your hate blogs. Maybe that will help the economy.
Christiangirl commented on Oct 14 11 at 11:35 amAnd saying that the rich do not “hoard their money” is also ignorant. Not that I agree that Illegals put more into the economy that they take out. B Seriously I bet half of you are unemployed. I promise there are jobs out there just check craigslist!!!
Little Frogs commented on Oct 14 11 at 9:09 pmAnd Christiangirl suggest I prostitute myself out on Craig’s list. Okay then.
