Amanda Knox’s Family Reacts to Her Acquittal
Deanna Knox emerged triumphantly from the courtroom in Perugia and spoke for her entire family to celebrate the acquittal of her sister, 24-year-old Amanda Knox.
As reported by the Daily Mail, Deanna Knox spoke to the crowd, with her father Curt and mother behind her, saying: “We are thankful that the nightmare is over. She suffered for four years for a crime she did not commit … We are thankful for the support from all over the world, people who took the time and trouble to research the case and knew that she was innocent.” Amanda Knox had been sentenced to 26 years for the murder of Meredith Kercher in 2009, but the sentence was reversed tonight on appeal.
Amanda’s boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito was also acquitted. Live bloggers with Sky News report that Raffaele’s father stated, “Tonight, I’ve got my son back.”
Meredith Kercher, 21, was found half naked and with her throat cut in the house she shared with Amanda Knox in Perugia, Italy. The UK’s Daily Mail reports Kercher’s “… heartbroken mother Arline, sister Stephanie and brother John, shook their heads in disbelief and hugged each other for comfort …” upon hearing the verdict. They quickly left the courtroom and got into a waiting care without making any public statement about the acquittal.
Earlier today, the Kercher family, which has kept fairly silent during the trials, spoke about the loss of Meredith. Sister Stephanie asked people to remember the “brutality that must have happened that night” and the “fear and terror” Meredith Kercher must have felt. The Kerchers still strongly believe Knox and Sollecito are guilty.
