Woman Sent Home From Hospital Gives Birth to Baby in Mini Van
This is something that has happened to countless woman. You are at the end of your pregnancy. You are ready to give birth. You start to have contractions and rush to the hospital. The hospital tells you to just go home and come back when the contractions are stronger. You oblige. Now generally, their advice is well-founded, but occasionally they are wrong. Very wrong. Case in point Rebecca Herrick of Moisnee, Wisconsin. She –- like most expectant moms –- intended to have her baby in the hospital. But instead she ended up giving birth in the passenger seat of the family’s mini van which was reported by MyFoxWausau. What happened?
“They said we should go home,” said Herrick when they first went to the hospital. “So we did.”
“People that we have to send home, they get disappointed,” said Annette Scott-Chadwell, the interim director for the hospital. “They think they’re having contractions but they’re not causing their cervix to change.”
Herrick and her partner Shawn Lewer went home but were soon back on the road heading right back to the hospital. Herrick’s labor pains began to get more and more intense. ”I just kept going,” said Lewer. “I knew I had to get her here so that’s what I did.” At one point Lewer told Herrick to not push and try to wait until they arrived at the hospital, but she couldn’t help it.
“He was born at that point in the passenger seat of the van,” said Lewer. “The front passenger seat. She was kind of not sure what to do, so I told her to put him upside down and pat him on his back to make sure that he’s breathing.” Soon after they arrived at the hospital. ”They cut the cord in the van and took him one way and took me the other way,” said Herrick. “They did a great job. And now we’re both okay so that’s the good part.”
But in the end all was well. “He’s perfect,” said Herrick. “He is.” But they don’t plan on letting this happen again. “Next time we’re staying at the hospital,” said Lewer. “I don’t care what they say.”
