Shanel Nadal

In a bizarre story, a New York City couple abducted their own eight children from a foster care facility on Monday.

Mom Shanel Nadal, visited her children at the Forestdale child agency on Monday afternoon. It was a regular visit for Nadal, who has seven boys between 4 and 11 years old (strangely enough each named Nephra Payne) and an 11-month-old girl named Nefertiti.  At some point in the visit, Nadal sneaked the children out of the foster care facility and hasn’t been seen since.

Nadal is believed to have fled with the kids and their father, Nephra Payne, 34, in a black 1996 Chevrolet Suburban.

The children were taken away from the parents due to abuse and neglect so it’s debatable whether these kids are safe alone with their mother and father. How in the world did the foster care authorities not notice eight children being led out by their abusive parents who lost custody of them?

While the children are with their own biological parents, this mom and dad proved unfit to parent, so the kids’ safety is questionable at best.

The NY Daily News reports that the foster parents of three of the children fear the worst. Corey King, 31, whose sister Linda Mitchell has fostered five of the boys for the past three years, said he and his sister were devastated:

“These kids were taken away from their parents for domestic abuse. We are worried for their safety. We are afraid they might get hurt.”

This isn’t really a fair representation, in terms of the children’s name, anyways. They all had different middle names, and it is not that uncommon to call children by their middle names (my original family does it – we are all known by our middle names, not our first, although I did not follow that tradition with my family).
Without knowing why the children were placed in foster care, it’s hard to know what’s going on. My first instinct was to think “of course they took their own children back!”.

I worked for legal aid in NYC, and the foster care system is completely overwhelmed. Also, the primary goal in NYC is family reunification, so parents are given chance after chance. So no, kids don’t spend 3 years in foster care there unless the situation is quite bad: not only what ever the parents did to lose the kids in the first place, but their continuing failure to live up to standards adequate to get them back, or even, in this case, have unsupervised visitation (although clearly here the visitation was not supervised nearly enough). So yeah, there is quite enough information here to say that this is very very bad.

I agree w/NASRIN, the entire NYC foster care system is beyond overwhelmed and to say it’s understaffed is a understatement. My family has had experience w/taking in foster kids and unification of the family unit is the #1 priority of the courts. If these kids were in the care of foster families for 3yrs, then it’s a safe bet that the biological parents are completely unfit and were most likely on thier way to losing thier parental rights entirely. Given the reports of the family’s history, I truly believe the kids are in danger and need to be rescued immediately. The fact that this kidnapping even occured under the supervision of a foster care facility is beyond excuse. Heads need to roll and people need to be fired immediately! But what’s most important is getting those kids back home safely. I hope that if someone knows about where these kids are, they will do the right thing and report that info to police. I hope these kids come home safely and not wind up in some horrible tragic ending….

@Andrea- Listing the middle names of these children is neither here or there, that’s the last thing anyone is thinking about in this case. I get your reasoning about the parents taking thier kids back, but let me clarify things for you. First, thier kids were taken away b/c of ABUSE AND NEGLECT. The kids were showing up to school w/black eyes, dirty and unkempt clothes, and were showing other signs of neglect, which was in part why they were taken away in the first place. The parents both have a violent background. There are a ton of steps that parents have to do to satify the courts to retrieve custody of thier children, which they clearly didn’t b/c the kids were still wards of the state for the PAST 3 YEARS. Parents are granted visitation and it’s usually supervised to protect the children’s best interest, until the court find them trustworthy to be unsupervised. If the courts don’t trust you enough to let you see your kids on your own w/out a court appointed babysitter after 3yrs in the system, it usually means that you are not TRUSTED for good reason. So, it’s justified that these kids are in real danger b/c their parents are good for nothing degenerates who shouldn’t even be given a dog to take care of, let alone a child.
