9/11 Through A Child’s Eyes

brook peters second day 300x131 9/11 Through A Childs EyesOf course we all remember where we were when the towers were struck. It’s one of those generation-defining moments, like the Kennedy assassination or the Challenger explosion.

As a young adult, it was one of the most dizzying moments of my life. I can only imagine how it must have looked through the eyes of children.

Imagine, or watch a new documentary made by a child who witnessed the tragedy. Brook Peters’ documentary, The Second Day, offers a child’s-eye view of 9/11 and its aftermath. Brook was just starting kindergarten when the towers fell. Now he’s about to enter high school, and he’s made a movie about the experience he and so many other New York schoolchildren lived through.

Brook began work on the documentary when he was just 11 years old, with nothing but borrowed equipment and a plan. His mother Michelle Peters, a single mom who was a regular volunteer at New York’s firehouses when 9/11 happened, helped him with every step of the project.

Brook’s film debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival and has been featured in numerous major media outlets. It’s a rare look at the perspective of the kids who witnessed 9/11 firsthand.

Did your kids live through 9/11? What was their experience like? How have you helped them cope with the aftermath?
