Google celebrates Freddie Mercury's 65th birthday with awesome Doodle.

There’s nothing better than waking up early to the smell of a fresh Google Doodle, is there?  There’s something so fun and exciting about hittin’ the old search engine only to find the masters at Google have created an intricate animated logo for us to play with for the day.  Today’s happens to honor what would have been the 65th birthday of rock legend and Queen frontman Freddie Mercury.

The Freddie Mercury Google Doodle is honestly one of their best yet – rivaling even their playable Pacman game from last year.  The Mercury Doodle is built as a sort of scrapbook/music box in beautiful purple and blue hues that comes to life as a rock concert video game when you click the gold play button.  Your kids will love watching a digitized Freddie in a bell-bottomed jumpsuit power his way through an obstacle course that includes flying stop signs and cupcakes as well as pyramids of lions, tigers and bears, all to the thumping beat of “Don’t Stop Me Now.”

Mercury died in 1991 at the age of 45 after battling HIV.  His birthday was celebrated in a big way in the UK, where yesterday (September 5th) was officially Freddie Mercury Day, the Telegraph reports.  The paper links to a lovely guest post on the official Google blog from Queen guitarist Brian May who wrote, “Freddie would have been 65 this year, and even though physically he is not here, his presence seems more potent than ever. Freddie made the last person at the back of the furthest stand in a stadium feel that he was connected.”  The connectedness you feel while listening to Queen’s glam rock power anthems – that sense of pride their music gives to even the queerest dork – seems to me a powerful thing in this day and age, when tweens and teens deal with bullying both in school and online.  May speaks to that transformative power in his closing sentiment, which reads:

[Mercury] gave people proof that a man could achieve his dreams—made them feel that through him they were overcoming their own shyness, and becoming the powerful figure of their ambitions. And he lived life to the full. He devoured life. He celebrated every minute. And, like a great comet, he left a luminous trail which will sparkle for many a generation to come.

Freddie Mercury’s flamboyant, outrageous confidence is embodied in Google’s delightful Doodle today.  Be sure to play the awesome video for your kids – they’ll love it!
