BREAKING NEWS: Earthquake In NYC? East Coast Kids Feel Tremors For First Time
A 5.8 earthquake just hit the the east coast, specifically the northwest of Richmond, VA. Tremors have been felt as far New York City, D.C. and North Carolina and all the way up to Rhode Island.
The Pentagon, White House and Capitol have all been evacuated as a precaution. Aftershocks are expected. Government city buildings have been evacuated, including City Hall and the federal courthouse in lower Manhattan.
I was writing in my kitchen when I felt the house begin to shake and saw objects moving in my house. The earthquake is said to have been centered in Charlottesville but conflicting reports are running rampant. Within a few minutes seconds, our neighbors ran out to the street not even knowing what was happening since we have no experience with earthquakes here on the East Coast.
Says Doug Kammerer, meteorologist with the NBC affiliate in Washington, calls the tremor a “very big earthquake for our area.”
The quake struck around 1:15 p.m. ET and lasted for about 30 to 45 seconds. There have been no reports of injuries or widespread damage.
Landlines and cell phones are out in many spots. Thankfully, the earthquake was minor compared to what our west coast friends are used to, although strange, nonetheless. It just dawned on me that we have no earthquake emergency plan, but now we will definitely make earthquake safety plans.
