Nintendo 3DS price drop coming August 2011!

A Nintendo 3DS price drop is coming soon, according to an announcement made today… but when will the price decrease, and by how much? And what does it mean for those parents who’ve already bought a 3DS for their kids at the higher price?

Seems the Nintendo 3DS didn’t quite fly off the shelves as Nintendo had hoped, with the company reporting flat sales after the 3DS was released four months ago in North America.

To move inventory, Nintendo announced today that they are dropping the price of the Nintendo 3DS from $250 to $170 beginning on August 12. A whopping $80 decrease, which is huge, given these gaming systems never go on sale.

Of course, if you’re a parent that already bought one for your kid(s), Nintendo is offering existing owners the Nintendo 3DS Ambassador program that provides 20 free game downloads from the Nintendo eShop. Not too shabby, considering they don’t have to do anything for existing users. It’s nice to see a company try and make things right.

Membership in the Ambassador program will be available to anyone with a 3DS who connects to the eShop via wireless “at least once” before 11:59 p.m. ET on August 11. Beginning September 1, these 3DS Ambassadors can download 10 NES Virtual Console games for free and before 2011 is up, Ambassadors will get 10 more free downloads from the Game Boy Advance Virtual Console catalog.

My household is jumping over the Nintendo 3DS price drop news – my 10 year old son has been saving for a few months now to reach that $250 price point and just this morning started to get a bit discouraged since he is still a little ways from the reaching that goal.

Given today’s announcement, however, he will have the money saved by the August 12 price drop! Best of all, I don’t have to pitch in a cent – I was beginning to consider giving him some extra money towards it, but now he will have worked hard and saved the money all by himself without help from mom and dad.

Okay, I’ll pick up the tax, I suppose.
