It looks like a mom of a potential superstar needs to figure out how to cut the cord between herself and her son
Devonta Pollard appears to be unstoppable. He’s the No. 6 overall high school basketball prospect in the Class of 2012 who’s being recruited by top schools like Kentucky, Duke and Georgetown.
But he might have some kryptonite just yet: his mom.
At a recent tournament in which the nation’s best college basketball coaches were present and watching the players closely, Pollard got pulled off the court. After making two mistakes. And it was his mom who benched him.
OK, to be fair, he made two consecutive errors.
“It’s hard to play a whole ball game, so I had to take him out to calm him down,” his mom said.
Check out the video (after the jump) that shows Mrs. Pollard sending in a sub after she pulls Devonta off the court (and, um, she’s not the coach, by the way). And then see what he managed to pull off after he returned. So maybe mom does know best after all. However, for Devonta’s sake, let’s hope his talent is top shelf enough that the top schools are willing to overlook the maternal albatross around his neck.

The kid’s dad died two years ago and his home burned down two months ago, so I guess being tagged as a mama’s boy is just icing on the cake. My question is, what kind of coach allows for that kind of behavior from a parent?
