Yet Another Tylenol Recall…Do Parents Even Use It Anymore?
How sick are you of hearing about another Tylenol recall?
I myself can’t recall any other company that orders recalls of their products quite as much as Tylenol does.
Today’s recall involves Tylenol Extra Strength Caplets.
According to CBS News, J&J’s McNeil division said it had gotten reports about the odor, which has been linked in past recalls to the presence of traces of 2,4,6-tribromoanisole. The compound – a byproduct of a chemical preservative used on shipping pallets – has been linked to transient gastrointestinal symptoms.
I don’t understand why this happens so often yet Johnson & Johnson manages to be able to manufacture their products without incidence or penalty. Particularly, when so many of the recalls involve medication that is administered to babies and children, there needs to be assurance that when we buy the products, they will be safe.
Honestly, I buy the generic versions now if my children ever need them. The generic versions haven’t been recalled; they’re cheaper and offer the same basic ingredients, so why not?
Large companies market themselves to parents on the trust factor of knowing the brand name, but in this case, the name is backfiring on them.
Do you still but Tylenol for your kids? How about for yourself? Why do you think the recalls keep occurring?

J&J recalls more Tylenol Extra Strength pills – Atlanta Journal Constitution | Popular Hot News commented on Jun 29 11 at 4:50 pmShandeigh commented on Jun 29 11 at 8:00 pmThe reason why is that Tylenol ALWAYS errs on the side of caution and public safety. If you remember back in the 80s when there was a problem with some pyscho tampering with Tylenol… they recalled ALL tylenol not just the area where the tampering was happenin just to be on the safe side. It’s actually a good thing that they recall at the first sign of trouble… there are too many companies that try to cover things up and don’t put the public first.
Joy commented on Jun 29 11 at 8:13 pmIn J&J and the governments defense: J&J voluntarily did these recalls, the government has shut down two of their plants for reconstruction and all of the plants are under government supervision for the next five years. http://prescriptions.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/03/10/johnson-johnson-unit-signs-consent-decree-with-f-d-a/
This batch of recalled product comes from a plant that was shut down over a year ago. It was actually produced in 2009, so this problem isn’t one that keeps happening, it is one that happened for a period of time, is resolved, but they are just attempting to completely fix that problem.
Honestly I trust a company with the integrity to go to these lengths to solve a problem.
Janice (5 Minutes for Mom) commented on Jul 18 11 at 12:22 pmI agree with the other commenters — with the generic companies, I feel like they may not have the same strict standards. (I said may not, as I have NO idea what their standards are.) With Tylenol, I trust that they will recall if there is even a remote chance of something being wrong. (And while I have worked with Tylenol in the past on my blog, I am not writing this because of that relationship, but because there are numerous Tylenol products that I purchase regularly in my cabinet.)
