camp 300x222 10 Totally Awesome Summer Camps...So Cool Youll Wanna Go TooForget about the macaroni ashtrays, friendship bracelets and endless games of capture the flag. These days the traditional summer camp has a whole lot of competition with a slew of specialty themed camps that are taking place across the country.

It’s not just about a cabin and the great outdoors, these camps are focused. Very focused. These camps are for kids who have a specific interest, hobby or obsession. There are roller coaster camps, space camps, and secret agent camps just to name a few. Yeah, this ain’t the summer camp of my day, these camps are crazy cool.  They are camps that I myself wouldn’t just want to send my kid to but ones I’d actually want to go to myself. Too bad I’m too old.

Check out these 10 super cool camps right here – do you have a favorite that you’d want to end your kid to?

New York Film Academy
Kids on both coasts can learn the tricks of the trade and start exploring the world of filmmaking at the New York Film Academy. They can focus on animation, acting or basic filmmaking at this camp for kids age 10-13. It’s a pretty cool introduction, for example in the film camp kids write, direct and edit their own three minute movie using their fellow students as their crew. The camps take place in New York City and in Hollywood, the two-week camps meet every day, but sadly it’s not a sleep away camp so if you don’t live in one of these towns it probably wouldn’t be practical.

Just to offer some additional advice, online summer camp directories and eCamp sites are great resources for locating a summer program in a specific geographic location or one that specializes in a particular activity (sports, technology, etc.). To find a good eCamp site, go to Google and search “summer camps Los Angeles” or even the state name like California. I actually work for iD Tech Camps and iD Teen Academies where we run summer tech programs across the nation. Students can learn iPhone app development, video game design, website creation and much more. We hold weeklong programs at UCLA, Stanford, NYU, Columbia, Princeton, Harvard and others http://www.internaldrive.com/locations/. Anyway, I just wanted to pass along the information, but if you have any specific questions feel free to call 1-888-709-TECH (8324) or email info@internalDrive.com. Good luck with your camp search!

For kids who are passionate about swimming, they can beat the summer heat and the competition by attending Peak Performance Swim Camp. It’s a touring, competitive swim camp led by author, camp founder and former Olympic coach, Nick Baker.

Peak Performance Swim Camp offers holistic training for kids 9-18 years-old. A Nike / U.S. Sports Camps partner, camps are offered around the country from Washington, D.C. to Seattle, featuring Elite, Senior Advanced and Junior Advanced training programs.

Interested? Check it out at http://www.swimcamp.com. Have a great summer!

Wow!!!!! I liked the idea of New York Film Academy. Children can create their own movie and animate it also.
