Google Doodle Logo Honors Les Paul With Playable Strings: Kids Will Love This One
Kids can pretend they are Les Paul and actually play today's Google Doodle logo.
Google has really vamped up their commemorative logos and a lot of them appeal to children with their interactive features. Just last week Google honored beloved children’s author with a Richard Scarry logo depicting Busytown. But today’s logo just might be the best one yet.
It honors musical genius and guitarist Les Paul with a playable logo. Yes, you (and your kids) can strum away at the strings on the computer and create your own music.
Technically, Google says it took some thinking to pull this off, and here’s how they did it:
“If you’re curious, the doodle was made with a combination of JavaScript, HTML5 Canvas (used in modern browsers to draw the guitar strings), CSS, Flash (for sound) and tools like the Google Font API, goo.gl and App Engine.”
Les Paul was born as Lester William Polsfuss on June 9, 1915. He was an American jazz and country guitarist, songwriter, and a pioneer in the development of the solid-body electric guitar which “made the sound of rock and roll possible.” His early experiments with overdubbing (also known as sound on sound), delay effects such as tape delay, phasing effects and multitrack recording were among the first to attract widespread attention. Paul is one of very small group of artists that has a permanent, stand-alone exhibit in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Kids who are musically inclined will love playing along. Even kids who have never picked up an instrument will get a kick out of this Google Doodle.
What’s even more fascinating, perhaps, is that the logo also has the ability to record the music you make with the computer generated strings, so whatever kids strum can be easily recorded and played back using the record button. Try it yourself and see if you can’t stop strumming this melodic logo.
