Is Katie Couric’s New Show the Final Nail in the Coffin of ‘General Hospital?’

Will fans of 'General Hospital' - working and stay-at-home moms - tune in to watch Katie Couric's new show if it turns out she's responsible for its demise?
Is America’s Sweetheart responsible for the demise of one of the most popular daytime dramas of all time?
Katie Couric left her post as the anchor of the CBS Evening News last week with much less fanfare than when she started five years ago. For her $15 million annual salary, her nightly broadcasts came in dead last place and she seemed just as happy to leave as CBS was to get rid of her.
Then came the announcement on Monday that Couric is heading over to ABC to host a new talk show that will premiere in the fall of 2012. And it will air during the time slot that is currently occupied by General Hospital.
While ABC has yet to announce that General Hospital is canceled, in a press release the network said that it “continues to support” the show, even though it didn’t expand further on what it meant by “support.”
Two new shows will premiere on ABC daytime this fall, and if neither catches on, there’s a chance General Hospital could get a second wind. But media experts aren’t holding their breaths, speculating the end of the 48-year-old daytime drama is inevitable, especially considering how much ABC will pay to produce Couric’s new show.
General Hospital is the third longest-running soap of all time, and the last one on ABC.
The irony, of course, of Couric’s new show being potentially responsible for the cancellation of General Hospital is that she has long been thought of as a relatable and likable personality to millions of working and stay-at-home moms. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of support she gets — if any — from the audience expected to tune in to her instead of the show they’ve longed used as an escape from the rigors of their daily life.
Will you watch Katie Couric’s new show even if it turns out it’s responsible for the demise of GH?

k hickey commented on Jun 08 11 at 11:23 ami will not watch katie couric, boring. GH way better.
ANGIE commented on Jun 08 11 at 12:25 pmI DON”T like her NOW!!! She does not need a darn talk show, no one watches those unless it’s Oprah. Let her take the 4pn slot WHY WHY does it have to be when GH is on????? It doesn’t, she can live the rest of her life & never work again, she DOES NOT need a show of her own, I WIL NEVER watch it. GH is my fav soap the ONLY one I watch now, & to think it will be taken off the air just because Katie left her job??? Why can’t she stay with CBS or go to
NBC??? I don’t care where she goes, just stay AWAY from ABC & GH!!!! I love GH and all the cast, except Brenda & Jax, they can run off together never to be seen & that would be fine by me, but keep the rest of the cast……DON’T take away the best soap ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MnMama commented on Jun 10 11 at 4:34 pmWe don’t need one more boring and repetitive talk show on daytime TV. It’s all the same crap – drink more water, eat more vegetables, read this book or that book, where to find spring’s latest fashions at an affordable price. Or celebrity gossip. ISH!
I want romance, hot men and drama!
