I had no idea I could be considered cymotrichous until last night. But yes, I have wavy hair which is what this hard-to-spell adjective actually means.

Luckily for fourteen-year-old Sukanya Roy, spelling this word was a piece of cake. It earned her the title of champion of the 84th Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Roy, from South Abington, Pennsylvania is the fourth consecutive Indian-American to win the title. By taking home top honors, she receives $40,000-plus in cash and prizes.

Watching the Spelling Bee always amazes me. I won the spelling bee at my school when I was just ten and competed against 14 year-olds. Intimidated as the youngest kid on the stage, the word I got out on in the city finals was fundamental, a far cry from cymotrichous.

I forgot the say the first A and consequently spelled “fundmental”. That word haunted me for years … and I guess you can say it still dose since I’m relating this story.

I never entered the Spelling Bee again after that, unlike Roy who placed 20th last year. Before that, in 2009, she tied in for 12th place in 2009. Like they say winners never give up and that determination certainly paid off for Roy.

Were you in the Spelling Bee as a child? What word did you get out on? Do you hope your children will be in the Spelling Bee?
