A Nespresso Machine and Capsules for Baby Formula?
Nespresso coffee machines have a new little sister: BabyNes.
Just like the single-serving coffee cups, you drop in a BabyNes capsule, heated water is forced through the machine and out comes warm — but not too hot — mixed baby formula.
Right into the bottle.
BabyNes is another product from the Swiss Nestle conglomerate. The machines and capsules available in Switzerland sell for about $284. Packs of the capsules sell for between $50 and $60 for 26, which is about twice what families pay there for the powdered formula in the bulk cans.
Executives at Nestle think the BabyNes will be a game changer in the infant formula business, much like the Nespresso was for coffee drinkers. Martin Grieder, head of advanced nutrition systems at Nestle, told Reuters, “It’s very simple, very intuitive, hygienic and of optimum safety.”
Formula users, does a machine like this seem dreamy to you? I know people live for their single-cup coffee makers. What do you think?

CDN Mummy commented on May 27 11 at 4:00 pmI kind of think its crazy. I have the phrase “Come on is this for real?” running through my head right now. I can, however, see why this would be soooo helpful, it would reduce a lot of the time in fixing up a bottle but it’s too expensive for my liking.
Katie commented on May 27 11 at 5:44 pmJust a guess…no one likes to envision while they’re pregnant that there will be a time when they are exclusively using formula–so it will seem like a massive waste of money to register for it/buy it an advance.
Once you realize you’re in the trenches of all formula, all the time? You’ll have realized what a sting the cost of “cheap” formula is, and will have no desire to make it more expensive. Especially since you couldn’t take this on the go.
Find a way for it to defrost bags of breastmilk, though? You would sell it to a lot more naive hopefuls :)
Madeline Holler commented on May 27 11 at 7:48 pmI don’t know, that pre-mixed canned stuff is super expensive … and you have to heat that stuff up! Plus, Nespresso machines (for coffee) are super cheap (or fairly inexpensive) because the money is in the capsules. I can see people passing the BabyNes on once baby’s on solids.
They should put one of those milk frothers on the side of this machine, then people who do both are really getting a good deal!
mamaspike commented on May 28 11 at 1:01 pmBoth of my kids were/are exclusively breastfed, but I think this is a great idea! I think my brother and his wife would have loved one of these for their four kids, who were all formula-fed. In fact, they were the first people I know to have a Keurig for their coffe! This could be more cost-efficient for someone with many kids, or to pass on to a friend (as Madeline noted), or sell on Craigslist.
Sascha barbaro commented on Jun 02 11 at 8:38 amAs a mum of two, I would buy this machine in a heartbeat – in fact ive already emailed the company to see how I can get one in Australia. I also think the price is reasonable. You can buy pre made formula in cartons at about $3 per serve so this machine is actually economical! I WANT ONE and would pay thousands for it!
bea commented on Jun 11 11 at 10:42 amI can see this working in a hospital or day care center as long as the temperature is right.
I love my single serve coffee machine but for me that’s one more thing on my already tiny counter.
ANDY commented on Dec 05 11 at 11:54 pmIt seems perfect, expensive but dreamy. It takes only a minute or two to have the bottle ready for the baby. The BIG issue with this machine is the water does NOT boil, since it is programmed to have a ready-to-drink bottle in less than a minute, the water never boils and therefore, it’s not safe (healthy) enough for the baby. When you prepare formula the water you use always MUST boil!
RACHEL commented on Feb 15 12 at 2:41 pmI think this is great, but Andy I hve never heard of baby formula having to be boiled first, mine comes straight from the jug of infant water, if you use that already just add it to the machine. You never boil water where I am at.
