Cornual pregnancy has a happy ending for one woman.

Pregnancy can be a risky business, as any woman who has dealt with miscarriage or complications knows. Many of you have likely heard the term “ectopic pregnancy,” which takes place when the embryo implants itself outside the uterus, most often in the fallopian tube. According to Baby Center, “There’s no way to transplant an ectopic (literally, “out of place”) pregnancy into your uterus, so ending the pregnancy is the only option.”  They add, “If an ectopic pregnancy isn’t recognized and treated, the embryo will grow until the fallopian tube ruptures, resulting in severe abdominal pain and bleeding.”

A cornual pregnancy is similar to an ectopic pregnancy, but during a cornual pregnancy the embryo becomes attached to the area where the fallopian tube meets the uterus.  As you can imagine, cornual pregnancy is as much a threat to a woman’s health as an ectopic pregnancy, which is why doctors consider it a miracle that a Phoenix woman successfully gave birth this week to a baby boy who gestated in her abdomen.

The mother, Nicolette Soto, “risked her life to deliver the child, and fortunately, both mother and child are doing well after undergoing successful surgery at Banner Good Samaritan,” FOX News reports.  Soto’s son weighs just 2 pounds, 14 ounces.  ”It’s very unusual, she’s very fortunate and we are pleased that she and the baby are doing well,” says Dr. Curtis Cook from Phoenix Perinatal Associations.  Soto’s baby was born at 32 weeks, “and doctors believe this is the only happy ending” resulting from cornual pregnancy, according to FOX.
