Today's Google Doodle honors dancer Martha Graham.

Calling all dancers! (and those who love dancing)

Today’s Google Doodle honors the beautiful dance moves of Martha Graham as it celebrates her 117th birthday. If you have a child who loves dance or if you love dance yourself, take a look at this animated doodle. Even those who aren’t fond of dancing might enjoy this animation. It showcases some of Graham famous moves and manages to capture her graceful movements.

Graham has been compared to the Picasso of the art world and she was an artist herself in the way she danced and considered dance an art form. She created a new dance movement aimed at reflecting the joy and ecstasy of the human condition.

She was a choreographer and danced for over seventy years and also performed at the White House, became a cultural ambassador traveling abroad, and received the highest civilian award of the USA, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

A lot of people don’t consider the arts worthy enough for their kids to pursue on a full scale basis. Sure, they’ll sign them up for dance and art classes but when the child gets older, many parents expect a more practical turn to the child’s studies. While I understand how parents would want their child to pursue a career with a definite progression not to mention a good job outlook, you cannot overlook natural talent and a passion for the arts. It’s innate and it needs to be recognized and valued.

Just consider what the world would have missed if Martha Graham chose a more practical life pursuit. Check out the Google Doodle here and share it with your kids.
