Glee's prom episode included a cover of Rebecca Black's "Friday."
In last night’s prom-themed episode of Glee, Puck, Artie and Sam busted out a rendition of the viral hit “Friday,” picking up the tempo and adding a techno beat that made the Ark Music Factory jam sound almost like a legit song. Digital Spy reports that Glee producer Ryan Murphy defended the choice to cover 13-year-old Rebecca Black’s widely-panned tune, despite the fact that she’s received death threats because of it.
Murphy says he wasn’t mocking Black or the song, but explains, “The [club was] hired to perform songs for the prom and they were told by the principal to please do popular songs that the kids know…. The show pays tribute to pop culture and, love it or hate it, that song is pop culture.”
We we we so excited about this cover, especially since the “car rap” goes to Artie, which is only fitting, since he’s got wheels. But the most controversial part of last night’s episode was probably the crowning of Kurt (played by the adorable Chris Colfer) as prom queen. Kurt decided to accept the prize, even though his nomination was meant to be a prank by mean-spirited classmates who wrote him in. (At least they didn’t cover him in pig’s blood, right Carrie?)
Here’s Glee‘s excellent rendition of “Friday:”
I especially appreciate the nod to the hand jive scene from Grease at 26:59. Nice work.
