Casey Anthony Defense Doesn’t Want Her Parents In The Courtroom
Last minute legal wrangling is underway in the last few days before Casey Anthony’s murder trial is set to begin.
The defense team of the Florida mom accused of killing her 2-year-old daughter doesn’t want her parents in the courtroom for during her first-degree murder trial.
Prosecutors say 25-year-old used Casey Anthony used “a substance” to kill her daughter, Caylee. Anthony faces a capital murder charge in the death of her daughter, plus six other charges including aggravated child abuse, aggravated manslaughter of a child, and misleading law enforcement.
Anthony’s lawyer filed a motion objecting to a motion from her parents — George and Cindy Anthony — who want to be exempted from the rule of sequestration for relatives of the victim. The defense wants the Anthonys to be sequestered “throughout all relevant portions” of the trial.
The parents have the right to attend all crucial stages of the proceedings, but “this right must yield to the defendant’s right to a fair trial,” the defense motion said, citing a ruling in another case.
Courts typically prefer that witnesses not be allowed to attend out of fear that others’ testimony could affect that of the witnesses.
Caylee Anthony was reported missing in July 2008, about a month after she was last seen. It was Caylee’s grandmother – Casey’s mother – that reported her missing when she learned the 2-year-old had been missing for so long and confronted her daughter about it.
The case has generated such intense media coverage that the court has decided to move jury selection, scheduled to start Monday, to another location because of concerns about getting an impartial jury in Orange County. Jurors will be taken to Orange Country for the trial.
Casey will get one last visit with her mother before trial over the weekend. Orange County Corrections officials have confirmed that Cindy Anthony has scheduled a visit with her daughter in jail on Saturday morning, at 9 a.m.
