Sons of Osama Bin Laden & Muammar Gaddafi: Paying the Ultimate Price for Fathers’ Battles
On Sunday, one of Osama Bin Laden’s sons – Khalid bin Laden – was killed by the U.S. military during the siege to assassinate the al-Qaeda leader, aka his dad. Just one day earlier, Muammar Gaddafi’s son Saif al-Arab (as well as three of his grandchildren) was killed when NATO forces shot missiles at Gaddafi’s family villa. One thing for sure? It was tough weekend to be the son of a Middle East leader.
Both of these sons were killed not for what they did, but for what their fathers have done. They were collateral damage – wrong place, wrong time, wrong dad. There is much that we inherit from our parents, perhaps we get their eyes, their hair, their laugh. Others pass down their ideals, their battles, their wars. These young men may have been set to follow in their father’s footsteps, but we will never know, since both were killed during military actions executed to target their dads.
How passionate must one be about their cause that they not only risk their own life and limb but that of your offspring? Not that Bin Laden or Gaddafi intentionally put their children in harm’s way, but both men must have known the risk involved with having their children near. Did their unwavering belief in their cause unwittingly kill their sons?
