The United States has sought bin Laden — dead or alive — for nearly a decade

The man behind the catastrophic terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 in New York, Washington, DC, and Pennsylvania is dead. He was the mastermind that caused the death of nearly 3,000 people, making it the deadliest day on United States soil since the attack on Pearl Harbor in World Ward II.

The United States has the body of Osama Bin Laden, who was killed as the result of a U.S. military action. Various news sources reported at around 10:30 p.m. EST on Sunday that U.S. personnel were taking responsible for his death. Bin Laden died in Pakistan, where he is thought to have been hiding since Sept. 11, 2001 in the mountains on the border of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The Saudi-born Bin Laden disappeared in Afghanistan late in 2001. He is also connected to the first bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993, and is believed to have been responsible for the U.S. embassy bombings in 1998 in which hundreds of people were killed in simultaneous truck bomb explosions at the United States embassies in three major East African cities.

President Obama addressed the nation late on Sunday night and said the United States has worked since he became president to make the capture or killing of bin Laden the country’s top priority. The president revealed that a tip came in last August that he had been spotted, and earlier today the president authorized a targeted action against the compound in the Pakistani city of Abbottabad in which he had been hiding for months. He was killed in a firefight, at which time the United States took custody of his body.

The president called bin Laden’s death the most significant action to date against the war on terror, although he clarified the United States is not at war with Islam.

He also said:

Let me say to the families who lost loved ones on 9/11, that we have never forgotten your loss, nor wavered in our commitment to see that we do whatever it takes to prevent another attack on our shores. And tonight, let us think back to the sense of unity that prevailed on 9/11. I know that it has been, at times, frayed. Yet today’s achievement is a testament to the greatness of our country and the determination of the American people. The cause of securing our country is not complete but tonight we are once again reminded that America can do whatever we set our mind to. That is the story of our history.
