The Pain Of Prince William
When I think about why I didn’t have as much enthusiasm for the Royal wedding as others did, I think it’s because I kept focusing on Princess Diana.
Every time I looked at Charles, I saw a husband who cheated on his wife, divorced her and then married ‘that woman’. I thought about how lovely the wedding of Charles and Di was and how it ended in adultery and deceit. Yet even with all that aside, I had no interest in the fashion, pageantry, guest list, royal protocol or pomp and circumstance.
But none of those things are the reason why I was initially turned off from the big ceremony.
In the end, it was simply that when I watched the royal wedding, all I saw was a boy without his mother by his side.
I remember watching with horror the coverage of Princess Diana’s death as I fed my older daughter who was just a newborn at the time. I was struck by the images of her boys at Westminster Abbey for her funeral. I wept as Elton sang. Yesterday was the first time since Diana’s funeral that we saw William and Harry back at Westminster Abbey.
No matter what luxuries, responsibilities or privileges these people are given as royals, nothing makes up for young Harry and William having to live through their teen and young adult years without their mum. It’s heartbreaking.
Yesterday whenever I looked at William, I saw Diana. He has her good looks and heart and I think that is what sets him apart from his paternal side of the family. William is said to have been extremely close to Diana, and he and Kate visited her grave just days before the big day.
When I heard that William left an empty seat at the wedding as a symbolic gesture of where Diana would have sat, I got chills. And then I found out that Kate kept the bouquet so they could lay it at Diana’s grave soon after the wedding. Enter tears.
What I was thrilled to see was a happy, smiling William whenever he looked at his blushing bride. I hope that Kate will help him heal with the wounds of losing his mother in such a tragic way entirely too soon.
If Lady Di was in any way looking down upon her eldest son yesterday, I’m sure she was as proud as any mom could be… I just wish she could have been here to see it herself.

Danielle Sullivan commented on Apr 30 11 at 8:32 pmThey did, and I’m so glad that have that bond.
Sharyn commented on Apr 30 11 at 10:59 pmThat’s so sweet — I didn’t know she kept the bouquet to leave on Diana’s grave. I aspire to raise my son to be as kind and thoughtful as William seems to be.

Rosana commented on May 02 11 at 10:57 amIt was sad to see such a happy groom without his mom. I agree, should would have been so proud. However, the story about Her Royal Highness :) keeping the bouquet to place it on Diana’s grave is not true since she decided to follow a Royal Tradition dated back to 1923. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/royal-wedding/8485728/Royal-wedding-Kate-Middletons-bridal-bouquet-placed-at-Grave-of-Unknown-Warrior.html
Jen commented on May 02 11 at 8:21 pmI think you hit the nail on the head as to why it took so long for him to walk down the aisle with her. Think how terrified he must be to relive his parents hell?
Jean Grant commented on Apr 30 12 at 3:46 pmGod bless Prince William, Kate and Harry. May their lives be filled with joy and the past slowly be forgotten. May they grow and learn and be happy.
