No Jail Time For Canadian Mom Charged In Newborn’s Death
Courtny Dawn Taylor was given house arrest after her newborn was found dead in a dumpster.
Canadian mom Courtney Dawn Taylor has avoided jail time in the death of her newborn son and was sentenced on Monday to a mere house arrest and two years probation.
In 2009, Taylor gave birth to a baby and said she never knew she was pregnant until two days before she gave birth in her boyfriend’s bathroom. She also claims the baby was stillborn as a result of the umbilical cord being wrapped around the baby’s head.
Taylor told her boyfriend what happened, and he encouraged her to get rid of the baby saying it would start to “smell and decompose.” The boyfriend was not charged in the incident.
After a co-worker noticed her visibly thinner from one day to the next, they called authorities. Police scoured the neighborhood until they located Taylor’s dead newborn son.
The baby was found dead wrapped in a garbage bag in a dumpster a nearby school.
According to a pre-sentence report, Taylor was not remorseful and went to a casino the day after giving birth. She also smoked pot and continued to socialize.
Taylor plead guilty only to disposal of human remains, not of causing the baby’s death. Under the terms of her sentence, she must notify her probation officer and a doctor if she becomes pregnant again. She will serve the first six months of her sentence under house arrest. The sentence also includes two years probation and 50 hours of community service.
