Statue Of Liberty Stamp Honors The Wrong Statue

statue of liberty stamp Statue Of Liberty Stamp Honors The Wrong StatueThe Post Office intended to create a new stamp celebrating the Statue of Liberty, but somebody goofed. The photograph on the stamp doesn’t feature the real Statue of Liberty, but the replica of the statue that stands in the fake Skyline of the Las Vegas Casino Hotel New York, New York. Oops.

According to an article at NJ.com, the post office is not overly concerned about the misrepresentation.
“We still love the stamp design and would have selected this photograph anyway,” said United State Postal Service spokesman Roy Betts. Really? They would have chosen to honor a historically significant statue with a photograph of a statue at a Casino….on purpose?

Seen side by side, the differences between the real Lady Liberty and the Vegas version are quite clear:

The Real Statue of Liberty

The most obvious difference between the two is the way the surface shows the effects of age and weather in one and looks completely pristine in the other. There’s a sharpness to the Vegas version, especially visible around the eye area. The Vegas liberty seems to be made out of something different—she looks carved rather than cast. And I also see a difference between their facial expressions (the angle is different here, but it’s visible elsewhere). The real Liberty looks strong, if concerned. The Vegas version just looks worried.

The picture was chosen from a photo service (which apparently could improve its labeling). My son’s class just finished their own collaborative replica of the Statue of Liberty. Maybe the Post Office will be interested in the picture below for next time?

I would buy stamps with the replica from your son’s class in a heartbeat. It’s awesome.

Thanks for covering this story. It’s really crazy that the post office didn’t realize this was not the real statue. It should have been obvious to them just based on the lack of stains alone. … By the way. The statue of liberty isn’t “cast” like most statues. Because of its huge size, it’s made of copper sheets which were pounded into shape.
