before you were born young love 300x219 Parents Tell Kids Their Stories of Love

The once-happy couple tells all.

We’re a generation of oversharers, even if we don’t know it. People today take and post pictures for total strangers to see. We’re more than happy to update the universe on what’s for dinner.

But people have not always been like that. For one, dinner updates would have been hard just 10 (heck, 5!) years ago. And all those pictures? Film used to cost money.

Plus, there was a kind of privacy that older generations were expected to keep — maybe they thought others would be bored with the details (had they know what mundane details pass as crucial, these days). Or maybe social mores kept them from sharing too much about their love-life.

Whatever it is, our parents’ — your kids’ grandparents’ — generation has some catching up to do. Which is why Nerve’s “Before You Were Born Series” just sucks you in.

Today’s 20- and 30- and 40-somethings interview their parents to find out how they met and why they fell in love. There are pictures (before and after!) and invasive questions. And because the sharing never ends, all of it’s posted on the website.

You get the couple who exchanged psychic readings on their first date. And the two who took a 1,200-mile walk to see if they really liked each other. Lots of immigrant romance. And, of course, a guy in the band.

What’s great is that the kids are discovering secrets about their parents’ early relationship, stuff they didn’t already know. It makes me nostalgic for a time when there might still be secrets. Our kids need only click over to the blog and find out more than they want to about mom and dad.
