Why Are There So Many Unnecessary Hysterectomies? And What Is Happening to Change It?
Did you know that about two-thirds of all hysterectomies are performed unnecessarily? That is the figure being discussed in terms of the stunning amount of women who go through the very invasive surgery and who don’t really need too. According to recent reports, women are having their reproductive organs removed at a rate that really isn’t justifiable. But why are they getting them in the first place?
The removal of the uterus is often recommended to treat issues such as fibroids and endometriosis in the uterus. But often there are other solutions instead of going to such an extreme. But keep in mind there are still many women who a hysterectomy really is the best option, but it’s the rate that the surgery is being prescribed is what set off alarms.
The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan - and yes, they are an insurance company – announced a program this week where they will work with doctors to try to bring down the rate. Let’s hope this is not a case of an insurance company just trying to bring down there margins and is in fact a case where they do see the patient’s best interest at stake.
