Rebecca Black "Friday" parody, "Prom Night"

As a parent – and more specifically as the mother of a girl – I think I would be crushed if the Internet as a whole were making fun of my 13-year-old daughter’s recent attempt at YouTube stardom.  But when it comes to parodies of Rebecca Black’s terribly bad song “Friday,” I just can’t help but LOL.  Part of me feels bad for getting a kick out of this hysterical satire, but the less emotional, more reasonable part of me says I’m not actually laughing at or mocking Rebecca Black the girl – I’m laughing at the ridiculous song that was written for her by child exploitation experts.  I hope her parents can help young Ms. Black view her current Internet stardom (and their relationship with Ark Music Factory) in the same way.  If Black can woman up and own this moment in the sun (okay, the computer screen’s glare) she could end up the next Antoine Dodson.  (Run and tell that, homeboy!)  That remains to be seen, but in the meantime, please enjoy “Prom Night.”

That video you posted is not by Rebecca Black. “NO. I don’t have a song called Prom Night!! lol.” reads her Twitter feed. Why not post the video under discussion? It only has 12 million hits.

The music business has been about exploitation for many decades now. Also, nearly all musical artists pay for their own promotional materials, including videos.

Another Twitter post from _RebeccaBlack_:

“Forget Bieber fever, I have the Black Plague” hahahaha – made my day.

Hi Olive – I didn’t suggest that the video embedded in this post is by Rebecca Black – it’s clearly a parody of her song “Friday.” I’ve linked to the original, and I’m glad to hear that Rebecca is keeping a sense of humor and perspective about all of this!

I agree with you, I don’t want to make fun of a child, but I can’t help but think her video was hilarious. But I also think Rebecca Black is adorable, and this type of cluelessness is so normal for a 13 year old. I can imagine lots of 13-year-olds genuinely liking it, and really its no worse than a lot of other main-stream teenie-bopper pop music. I remember wanting to be a pop star, and if I could have participated in such cheese as a 13-year-old girl I think I would have been in pre-adolescent heaven. (Thank god my parents weren’t rich, and that youtube didn’t exist back then.)

Thanks the response Carol. There are many “Friday” parody videos out there. I’m not sure that this is one. Actually, it is an unauthorized YouTube troll using a fraudulent scam to pimp their song “Prom Night” by “Rebeca” Black, who is unaffiliated with the real Rebecca Black. These YouTube imposters pop up all the time.

Oops! I apologize that I got your name wrong Carolyn. :/

The fraudulent video posted above leads to “Rebeca” Black’s iTunes page, where his/her song “Prom Night” is selling for 99 cents.

Here is a link to the REAL Rebecca Black’s single “Friday”:

Currently, she only has the one song. It is #54 on iTunes top 100 singles and climbing!

But apparently, Olive is affiliated with Rebeca Black…

At which point do we have to start listing the performer as ‘Auto-tune’?

Riley commented on Mar 17 11 at 7:58 pm

How could someone have recorded and edited “Prom Night” together and had it on iTunes within 1 day of Friday going viral? As bad as it is, that could not have been done in 1 day. They would have to be psychic. There is definitely a connection here. I think Friday was a surprise hit and they are trying to sweep this “backup plan” under the rug and draw this hoax out as long as they can.

You know, it’s pretty dreadful, but not any more dreadful than Kesha or Britney or Justin Beiber.

That was really funny. I thought Kyle Cease did a fantastic job on his song Wednesday… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cnZeCusPaMM

OK! Magazine report on the “Prom Night” imposter:

Seriously, I was surprised that this was still here when I checked back today. If I were you, I would delete your whole post at this point.
