Are you a momblogger? An aspiring momblogger?

momoir graphic1 300x300 Are you a momblogger? An aspiring momblogger? My friend Sarah Bryden-Brown (who also happens to be the VP for Content and Community here at Babble.com) has just launched what I think is a rather brilliant project.

Sarah is an active supporter and fan of those of us known as “mommybloggers,” and she is writing a book, to be called “Momoir,” in which she will explore the huge cultural, literary and economic influence now wielded by the mommyblogger ecosystem. While flashier social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter currently get more attention, mommyblogs continue to flourish and gain new readers.

(Sidenote: In googling “momoir” for this blog post, I found out that Wordspy credits me with the earliest published use of the word, in a piece I wrote for Salon about GenX parents, back in 2003. I had no idea.)

In addition to exploring the larger issues related to mommyblogging, Sarah will also be doing personal interviews with quite a few mommybloggers (including me! I am so excited to be part of this.) about our blogging, how we got started, what we do to build audience, advice we have for bloggers just getting started, etc, etc

As part of her “Momoir” project, Sarah is launching a blog and Facebook community of her own. She wants to build an audience from scratch as she writes the book so that she can better understand the process. I think this is a really interesting approach. (I told Sarah that it sounds a bit like that Seinfeld episode with the coffee table book written about …coffee tables ;-) )

Sarah’s Momoir project is going to be a Big Deal, both because of her professional status in the online parenting category, as well as her skills in putting the story together. No one has yet written the definitive book on the culture and economics of the mommyblogging “industry,” but that’s exactly what “Momoir” will be.

If you want to get involved with the Momoir project, and become part of the community, please head over to the brand new Momoir Facebook page, and become a fan. Join the conversation, talk to Sarah about your own blogging experiences, and meet a lot of other great women writers. The Facebook page has already taken off, with some top bloggers chatting with newbies, and a lot of great advice and support being offered all around.

So are you a blogger? Share your blog link and a little about why you blog in the comments below. I love discovering new blogs! And if you’ve been thinking of starting a blog but haven’t yet, what’s holding you back?

I’m a mom who blogs, but I don’t think of myself as a “mommy blogger”. I think I talk at least 50% of time about my running. My blog is http://itsadoglickbabyworld.blogspot.com/ if anyone wants to read about having a 9 month old baby and running marathons!

Hey there! Love her project. :) I am a blogger–part mama, part photog, & all things creative. my motto is create.grow.inspire & that is what I help my readers achieve…with style!

Katie, I would love to be a part of this. I love blogging but have been too lazy to keep up with mine. I write a column for the Sentinel but it’s not as open and honest (or brazen) as a blog would be. What can I do to get involved?

Love this idea and can’t wait to see it develop. I’m at http://www.being5.com. I started blogging years ago as a true Mommy Blog — to update my family and friends about our daughter. But now, I blog for myself as well — Being5 is the best therapist I’ve ever had (not that I’ve ever had one).

Best from Seattle!

I started my blog, UsingOurWords.com, after a post I wrote for a Yahoo! employee blog got sent around and made it all the way back to some of my friends. I realized I had a lot to say about motherhood and I couldn’t wait to build my own community. I love to write about the ups and downs of parenting in an honest, comical and hopeful way. Let’s face it, no day (or mom) is perfect, but there are enough sweet and hilarious moments to celebrate that you can’t help but realize all of the hard work and emotional turmoil is sooo worth it. (So much so, in my opinion, that I’m expecting #3 in May!)

I think this is a fabulous idea! I can’t wait to join in the discussions on the facebook page. I am a mommy and I blog (http://jodiink.com). I have two sons, one of which has special needs and my blog started out as a way to process our journey with him. It has grown into more than just writing about motherhood with a special needs son and typically developing son; I post about my life outside of motherhood and the creative projects I’m getting into as well. I love the community of mommy bloggers!

I am new to blogging and my site is http://www.NewDayNewDeals.com and I post a blog each night about all of the baby deals for the next day so that moms don’t miss out on the good stuff. I am in the process of reading up on professional blogging and looking to move my “oldschool” site to a more blog friendly format. So far this has been a blast and I look forward to being part of her book community on facebook!

I’m new to blogging, but I started so that my family back in Alabama can keep up with us. It’s something I really enjoy and I hope to keep it up. One of my friends has hers printed into a book at the end of the year instead of scrapbooking and I thought that was a great idea.

I started my blog recently after attending the Alt Summit on blogging in January so I am officially a “newbie”. I blog to record my life and hope to connect with other people in doing so. I also blog as a structured way to get myself to write. I have a couple of posts about this very phenomena of “mommybloggers”- how as women we are taking the “invisible” parts of our lives and spinning something artful and
meaningful from them, elevating and sharing them at the same time. On top of all of this, some moms are making money doing this! The whole thing is AMAZING! I think ultimately, this is about women finding a venue to tell their stories and connect with other women. And it’s very empowering.

This is a post I wrote recently about this mommy blogger phenom after the NYTimes magazine profile on Heather Armstrong:

(If this is a repeat, I apologize, I responded via my iphone and wasn’t sure if it went through. . .)

I have http://www.rainydaysandmomdays.com and before that, http://www.reethinks.blogspot.com. I blog because I like telling stories, and with Rainy Days, I hopefully get to help other moms too. I’d love to be involved in this project :)

I have already gathered a few, really neat ‘new to me’ blogs through Momoir. I realllllly dig the concept of that project. I have a hard time calling myself a blogger – so I’ll stick with Experienced Mommy moonlighting as an aspiring blogger, but I do blog! Today is the one year anniversary, actually.

I am the writer of the blog The TRUTH about Motherhood http://www.motherhoodthetruth.com. I write my blog as a way to build my writing portfolio, chronicle my children’s lives and my life during this time ( it’s all such a blur right now) and build a community of support and reference. My blog is the truth as I live it. It’s may not always be unicorns and rainbows, some days I’m on a ledge and my girls are driving me to need a bowl of wine. Other days, they can do no wrong.Either way,I share with my readers. So much time is wasted between women trying to one up the other. Motherhood should not be a competition but a shared bonding experience. I love the idea of building relationships and sharing experiences with other mothers. I am a huge advocate of a world where sisterhood is grown through motherhood.

I started a blog last year because I love to document everything (probably more through photographs than words).

Ostensibly this is about mothering, poop, and academe (I’m an Associate Professor of English Literature when I’m not with my 2 and 4 year old children). Just wrote my 100th post yesterday, which makes me a new-born babe in the well-grown world of mommyblogging.
I write to make myself laugh, but mostly for catharsis: if someone else, anyone else, can see the humor in that feeling of being ripped down the middle by competing maternal/ career demands, it makes me feel so much better.

why I blog – because my master’s degree in accounting just doesn’t make me giddy inside like crafts and photography do. There are so many great ideas out there for inspiration and I hope to inspire others as well. Just like with anything, you’d want to have a first had referral, and that’s what’s great about the blogging community. Everyone is so open to sharing ideas and resources to say, “Hey, you can do this to!”

Mindy commented on Mar 18 11 at 1:51 pm

Wow, what a great idea. I look forward to participating and reading the final product.
My blog is going through a transition right now, I am partnering up with my best friend and we are changing the name to Healthy Mama, Healthy Baby (healthymamahealthybaby.com) although the content is staying the same.

:)

I’m a Christian homeschooling mom of 5 personally dealing with diabetes and asthma as well as varying degrees of asthma (and other issues) in all 5 children. I’ve touched on homeschooling and asthma and intend on dealing some with diabetes… but mainly speak from my heart and my Christian faith that helps me make it thru each day. I try to encourage others that no matter what you’re going thru… you can make it!
My blog is Voice From The End of Town found at http://hsmentormom.blogspot.com

I think this is a fabulous idea! Not affiliated with the Momoir Blog though?

I just started in January as a way to process my experience with postpartum depression. It’s been really cathartic for me, but I had no idea what else it would bring me. I didn’t even know this vast community was out there. I’ve connected with so many others and have had people tell me my posts are helping them get the help they need, so that’s a huge bonus I didn’t anticipate. So rewarding.
