Mike Huckabee Attacks Single Mothers and Natalie Portman. Is He a Hypocrite?

Huckabeethemoderatevoice 262x300 Mike Huckabee Attacks Single Mothers and Natalie Portman. Is He a Hypocrite? Mike Huckabee is no fan of the single mother.  In an interview with conservative radio host Michael Medved he railed against single moms and also at movie star Natalie Portman for conceiving a child out of wedlock (but he totally glossed over the fact that she will not be a single mother and will be getting married soon).

During the interview the topic of Natalie Portman came up, about how at the Oscars Portman had said that her fiancée Benjamin Millepied had given her “the most wonderful gift.” Huckabee declared that the “most wonderful gift” should have been a ring. He continued to say:

You know Michael, one of the things that’s troubling is that people see a Natalie Portman or some other Hollywood starlet who boasts of, ‘Hey look, you know, we’re having children, we’re not married, but we’re having these children, and they’re doing just fine.’ But there aren’t really a lot of single moms out there who are making millions of dollars every year for being in a movie. And I think it gives a distorted image that yes, not everybody hires nannies, and caretakers, and nurses. Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can’t get a job, and if it weren’t for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care. And that’s the story that we’re not seeing, and it’s unfortunate that we glorify and glamorize the idea of out of children wedlock.

You know, right now, 75 percent of black kids in this country are born out of wedlock. 61 percent of Hispanic kids — across the board, 41 percent of all live births in America are out of wedlock births. And the cost of that is simply staggering. (from radio interview)

He may be anti-single motherhood, but he is also a strong anti-abortion supporter.  In many cases, when the father is out of the picture,  women only have a couple choice, terminate their pregnancy or to be a single mother. So, if he thinks having an abortion is wrong and being a single mother is wrong, then what is the answer?  Yes, all these babies could be put up for adoption, but that is probably not a choice all women would want to make. And should he really be attacking Natalie Portman of all people. She did get the ring AND the baby. She’s just doing it a little out of order.

Do you think Mike Huckabee was out of line in his moral judgment of Natalie  Portman? And do you think it’s hypocritical to be anti-abortion and anti-single motherhood?

It’s not hypocritical of him to be against abortion and against single mother hood because he’s been so clearly pro-marriage all his life (married to the same woman for more than 35 years). BUT… this is the same politician who has pardoned or granted clemency to more than 1,000 felons, including murderers and serial rapists, some of whom have gone on to commit the same crimes again after being released. For him to be railing about an affluent actress who is engaged to, but not yet married to, the father of her baby-on-the-way is just ridiculous.

This man is a ignorant piece of garbage. “Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can’t get a job, and if it weren’t for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care. ” This is disgraceful that a government offical let alone someone hoping to be president would say. I pray to God that he is not elected. Hopefully the Single mothers in America will remember this statement. I know many people who are single mothers who are doing a fabulous job raisin their children, working, providing for them and NOT on government assistance. This guy is a joke.

This isn’t the first time this has come up:

I went eight pages deep into a Google search and was unable to find any evidence that Huckabee has ever extended this critique to Bristol Palin, of course.

I don’t disagree with the previous comments, however he has a point in that most single moms don’t have the same means as a Hollywood star. The reality is that single motherhood is a lot harder than, say, someone like Sandra Bullock makes it look. Money buys a lot of help.

Over on Jezebel they dug up his comments on Jamie Lynn Spears. He said he couldn’t pass judgment on her for being a single mother because she was choosing to carry the pregnancy to term. So yes, he is, but because of his selective commentary.

I do think being anti-abortion and anti-single motherhood just demonstrates the ultra-social conservative view point of on women. Good girls don’t, and girls who do should get married immediately or pressured into giving up any children they have out of wedlock.

He’s a disgrace to the human species!!! What about women who go to sperm banks, guess they’re uneducated and poor too huh. So what if these people are on asst., that is what it’s there for, besides we aren’t somet 3rd world country where we are popping out more and more kids that are dying from malnutrition. What about single moms who are single due to being divorced or widowed, guess they don’t count. I’m not married but have an 8yr old son, WHO GIVES A $HI+!!! That is why te divorce rate is so high in this country bc of smart ass’ like him, they think because they’re having a kid or wanting to have a kid they need to run out and get married or be forced to stay in a marriage even though there’s abuse just because some ass like Huckabee thinks it’s immoral. The US and the world would be a lot better off if these politicians didn’t put their morals and religious views ahead of their civic duties. We have people everyday trying to ban prayer before mtgs and graduations, or God off of money, or the Pledge of Allegiance, but no one tries to ban crooked one sided politicians who let their personal beliefs cloud their judgment and actions, WTH???
